Preparing for the Start of a New Semester

  • Combining Courses/Sections - Canvas allows instructors to move section enrollments from individual courses and combine them into one course. This feature is helpful for instructors who teach several sections of the same course and only want to manage course data in one location.
  • Communicating with Students - Early communication is vital especially for Fall 2020. To communicate with students prior to the start of the term you will need to adjust both the start and end date for your course and check the box for Students can only participate in the course between these dates
    • We suggest adding December 24, 2020 as the course end date (12 days after the end of the term). After this date the course will become read only.
  • Draft State - If you would like to work on your course Modules before allowing student access to the materials, you can work in draft state, which makes Modules invisible to students.
  • Files - If you are allowing access to Files in the Course Navigation, the default setting for all Files is 'published,' or visible to students. Please check to make sure the Files you wish to share with or hide from students are marked as published or unpublished, respectively.
  • Course Design and Development - The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) offers assistance with designing and developing a new course, or re-designing an existing course by incorporating technologies to improve learning outcomes in various learning environments. Contact CTL by filling out this short contact form.
  • Publishing Your Course - Remember to publish your course in advance of the course start date.

Getting Help with Canvas

The Digital Learning Team is transitioning ticket platforms! As part of this move we’re beginning to discontinue our canvas@gatech.edu ticket address. This email address will remain in place until December 31, 2020. At this time, you can still email in your issue and reply back in email to the tickets just like you always have.

However, we encourage you to try out the new process by going to the Teaching / Learning page on services.gatech.edu, clicking on Digital Learning Tools & Platforms page, then clicking on Request Help -  Digital Learning (located at the bottom of the page). This change will help us answer your tickets as efficiently as possible. We’ll also post the link to request help directly on the canvas.gatech.edu website.

New Canvas Key Performance Indicator (KPI) Tool to Help Instructors Collect Weekly Student Feedback

With more instructors than ever before teaching remote and hybrid courses this Fall semester, insights into course experience are critical for the continued success of both instructors and students at Georgia Tech.
With that in mind, the Center for 21st Century Universities (C21U) has developed a new tool that provides instructors with course-specific weekly snapshots of how students are performing. Designed to work seamlessly with Canvas, the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) Tool gives instructors a new, near real-time measure of student progress.

Beginning this week, the KPI pilot is available to any instructor who wishes to opt in via Canvas. If you are interested in testing this new tool, simply log in to your Canvas course and click “GT Apps Labs” in the course navigation menu on the left. GT Apps Labs is a resource that lists new tools that are available for your course, including the KPI pilot.

When instructors use the tool in their class, they are directed to a dashboard that shows the results for their course(s) each week. The color-coded heat map (like the sample pictured below) allows instructors to easily track trends over time and across dimensions. The dashboard is updated every Monday and contains weekly snapshots of students' self-ratings.

If you would like the new KPI tool to be installed in your Canvas courses, just click the GT Apps Labs in your course navigation. Have questions about this new tool or the installation process? Please submit a request for support through the Georgia Tech Service-Now website.

How Do I Enable Microsoft Together Mode and Large Gallery?

  • Together mode is a new meeting experience in Teams that uses AI segmentation technology to digitally place participants in a shared background, making it feel like you’re sitting in the same room with everyone else in the meeting or class.
  • Large gallery view (pictured above), is a new feature where you can see video of up to 49 people in a meeting simultaneously.
