Hello,

With Mubarak Bala's disappearance by Kano State becoming increasingly evident as the municipal authorities continue to refuse the Humanist Association of Nigeria's president of his rights, another story out of Kano state has a musician, Yahaya Sharif-Aminu (22) sentenced to death for violating blasphemy laws. Sharif-Aminu circulated a song via WhatsApp in March which landed him the conviction.

Blasphemy laws are a grievous affront to human rights. All of them should be abrogated by the end of the decade. Another practice that needs immediate cessation is the cruel, degrading, and torturous practice of "conversion therapy" targeting gay, lesbian, and bisexual persons.

An independent investigator's report to the Human Rights Council of the United Nations (UNHRC) has called for an end to conversion therapy. The Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, Victor Madrigal-Borloz has called to both end the practices and to penalize and prosecute those who conduct them on others.

Ridding the world of blasphemy laws and other strictures on "incurring religious sentiment" is an attainable goal. It's something that we must work toward and can accomplish together.

Have a great week.

sincerely,
