COVID-19 INFORMATION FOR PARENTS AND WHĀNAU

Alert levels have changed at 12 noon on Wednesday 12 August. Your alert level will depend on where you are in New Zealand.

You have done a wonderful job keeping your whānau and community safe throughout COVID-19.  We have overcome this before and we can do it again. Stay connected, and be kind to yourself and others. Your early learning service, school or kura, as well as the Ministry of Education, will be doing all we can to support you and your children at this time.

Early learning services, schools and kura are familiar with the alert level requirements, and have responded well to the immediate change in alert levels. If you have concerns, please contact your early learning service or school as soon as possible to discuss your situation.

THE GOLDEN RULES

It’s a timely reminder to remember the golden rules to help stop the spread of Covid-19:

  • Good hygiene practice everywhere is key – wash and dry your hands often, cough or sneeze in to your elbow and clean surfaces regularly.
  • Maintain appropriate physical distance where possible.
  • Record your whereabouts to help with contact tracing if needed. You can use the Covid tracer app if you can, or make a personal note. Ministry of Health – Download the Covid tracer app
  • Stay home if you’re sick. If you have cold or flu like symptoms call your Doctor or the Healthline team (for free) on 0800 358 5453 and check if you need to be tested. Testing is free.
  • Watch the 'How to wash your hands NHS song' courtesy of the UK National Health Service to help make the proper hand-washing technique more memorable for little hands.

IF YOUR CHILD IS IN TERTIARY EDUCATION

Alert Level 2 for students across all of New Zealand, excluding the Auckland region means:

  • Your provider will remain open, however necessary health control measures must be in place including social distancing and contact tracing
  • While it is not mandatory to wear a face mask or face covering, wearing them is advised where it is not possible to practice social distancing or to carry out contact tracing. This includes, for example, in crowded spaces on campuses, or teaching and learning situations where close physical contact cannot be avoided.

Alert Level 3 for students in the Auckland region means:

  • Stay home. Where students can access their courses online, they will continue to do so. For those students where delivery online is not possible some facilities may open (e.g. for research, post-graduate teaching, lab/workshops, or noho-based delivery).
  • Students in hostels, halls of residence or self-contained flats will remain open and Ministry of Health guidelines on hygiene and social distancing will remain.
  • Students are encouraged to wear masks or face coverings when out and about.
  • Student services, such as counselling and health services should continue to operate, with consultations delivered online or over the phone, where possible.

DISTANCE LEARNING SUPPORT

We are well prepared to support you should distance learning need to operate for a period of time beyond midnight Friday.

We have a range of options already in place to support students, parents and whānau with home learning and more is in train if required.

Hard packs

You may have already prepared your own hard pack materials in case of further disruptions to learning.

We want to gauge the level of need for hard pack learning materials above and beyond what you may already have.

Starting with schools and kura in deciles 1-4, our Auckland staff will be in touch to determine what additional support you may need. Please consider if you need packs, how many packs you may need and do what you can to ensure you have up-to-date address information for students, as this will minimise any delays and ensure packs get to the right places.

Television and radio

Home Learning | Papa Kāinga TV content that was broadcast between April and early July is available through TVNZ OnDemand. Te reo Māori TV content Mauri Reo Mauri Ora is available for te reo Māori learners from Māori Television on demand.

We have the option of reactivating our television programmes and lessons if needed, which will include new content.

For Pacific learners we have developed the Talanoa Ako Pacific Parent programme - Talanoa Ako on Air radio programme and Talanoa Ako Digital App, of which both are still accessible.

Online learning resources

Ki te Ao Mārama resources continue to be available on Kauwhata Reo for te reo Māori learners and are being updated. The Learning From Home website and its range of resources continues to be available and has been updated.

ClassroomNZ2020 is a platform with a range of online courses that is available to support distance learning, until the end of February 2021 at this stage. The online courses cover a wide range of NCEA subjects and levels, and were developed by Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura). The resources are aligned with the New Zealand Curriculum, meet NCEA requirements and can be used to supplement schools’ curriculum content. Ākonga in wharekura may use this platform to support their studies towards NCEA standards derived from the New Zealand Curriculum.

We are introducing content for students in Years 7-10 for the Auckland region, given the change in Alert level. This is a new initiative that will enable this group of students to access learning through ClassroomNZ2020. These learning experiences were also developed by Te Kura and align with the New Zealand Curriculum.

This is a great tool for schools without their own learning management system or as an extra addition. More information is available here.

The School Leavers’ Toolkit website also includes resources on wellbeing to support students.

Internet Connections

We are also continuing to roll out provision of internet access to around 50,000 student households (we are now working with our internet service providers to see if we can move more quickly on connections in the Auckland region).

Devices

We have delivered over 25,000 new laptops and Chromebooks to students. At present, there is no further funding available for provision of additional devices. Priority was given to students studying NCEA subjects in Years 11 to 13 and the majority of requests in these year groups across all deciles have been met. Schools distributed over 16,000 of their devices to students.

Schools outside Auckland at Level 2 should consider allowing students to take home school-owned devices as part of continuity planning in the event that other regions go into lockdown Level 3.
