DUT ICT STUDENT INSPIRES WOMEN TO EXCEL IN TECHNOLOGY
Third year Information and Communications Technology (ICT) student inspires women to excel in technology, Nombuso Msweli held her first online webinar titled: Reframe Your Mind for a Career in Technology, on Google Meet on Saturday, 8 August 2020.
The webinar took place after she was selected by Google to be an Ambassador for their Women Techmakers (WTM) programme.
Hosting the webinar was a step closer to Msweli fulfilling her dream of empowering women to excel in technology and changing their narrative on women in tech spaces.
DUT CHIRO STUDENTS WILL PLAY VITAL ROLES AT THE 2021 AFRICAN REGIONAL EVENT
Third-year Chiropractic students Tamia Abrahams and Kesego Chika are excited to have been selected to play vital roles at the 2021 African Regional Event (ARE) taking place at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) in 2021. The elections for nominations took place during the World Congress of Chiropractic Students (WCCS) annual general meeting (AGM) 2020, an international forum representing the global student chiropractic population.
The 42nd AGM was scheduled to be held in Toronto, Canada, but due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, was moved online and held in early July 2020.
Abrahams was chosen to be the convener of the 2021 African Regional Event and Chika was re-elected into the Legislative Committee as the Chair for 2020/21.
MOBEDI’S FASHION BUSINESS PROVES HER METTLE AT RECENT EDHE ENTREPRENEURSHIP INTERVARSITY COMPETITION
The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Fashion and Textiles final year student Diva Mobedi was ecstatic upon hearing of her recent entrepreneur triumph.
She won in the existing Business General category of the Entrepreneurship Development in Higher Education (EDHE) Entrepreneurship Intervarsity Competition.

DUT’S GENDER FORUM HOSTS WEBINAR ON GBV AND FEMICIDE IN SOUTH AFRICA
The Gender Forum which is based at the Durban University of Technology hosted a webinar in commemoration of National Women’s Day, focusing on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Femicide in South Africa.
The webinar was held on Friday, 7 August 2020 and featured guest speakers Cyril Palany and Dr Pearl Kupe, who both gave an overview of their work that they are embarking on in the fight against the scourge of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and Femicide in South Africa.
Welcoming DUT staff and guests to the online webinar was the University’s Gender Forum Chairperson Dr Rosaline Govender, who said that statistics show that Gender-based violence (GBV) is rooted in unequal power relations and social stereotypes.
WORK, MONEY, CHILDREN, RELATIONSHIPS AND HEALTH DESCRIBED AS BARRIERS OF WOMEN’S MENTAL WELLNESS
In commemoration of Women’s Month, the Employee Wellness Programme (EWP) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) held an online webinar on Women’s Mental Health Matters during the COVID-19 pandemic on Microsoft Teams last Wednesday, 5 August 2020.
It was facilitated by EWP’s manager, Samantha Rajcoomar and the main speaker was the Clinical and Counselling Psychologist, Nozibusiso “Nozi” Nyawose, who is also known for her work on the DStv programme named Utatakho.
Rajcoomar said the webinar was a starting point for women to obtain knowledge, resources, guidance and coping skills that can set them on a path to mental wellness.
