President's Message:
Kathryn Wilkinson

Summer months are usually quieter but there has been a lot of action both behind the scenes and on-stage at CFUW.

On August 8, we completed the AGM agenda from June 19-20 at a Special General Meeting and I’d like to thank the National Office Staff for giving up another summer weekend and also all of you who stayed indoors on a beautiful sunny day - at least it was in Mississauga.  All the Resolutions passed, including the two emergency Resolutions and work has already begun on preparing the Fall Advocacy packages.  After the June elections, we were short one Board member but we now have a full house as we welcomed Vickie Grabb who is the new VP Prairies. Board members have all met with our Governance Consultant and we are in the preliminary stages of developing a Strategic Plan.  We are also aware that CFUW members are expecting leadership and direction in regard to the Mediation Report.  We have formed a new Communications Committee chaired by Judy Hopps, VP Quebec in response to Recommendation 2 of the Mediation Report. We intend to consult with the membership both in the development of the Strategic Plan and in the Implementation of the Mediation Report. Barb DuMoulin, VP British Columbia and Acting President, and Joy Hurst, VP International Relations are co-chairing the Mediation Report Implementation Committee.

We are living through strange times and I appreciate that it is particularly challenging for Clubs as they plan their Fall activities.  National Office is also going through change as our Advocacy Coordinator Yasmin Strautins is leaving us this month and Robin Jackson is currently searching for a replacement.  The Office continues to work remotely with the challenges that entails but is still available to assist with technical support; for example, setting up  ZOOM meetings using our expanded ZOOM capacity.  We are also discussing ways to facilitate Clubs across the country sharing ideas and resources.  One suggestion is to issue an invitation to attend a virtual meeting of your Club. If you have news or suggestions, please share them with Rachel, cfuwgen@rogers.com  at National Office. A number of the CFUW Committees are beginning their work but we are still recruiting members for: Communications; Resolutions Committees, and Indigenous Persons; Status of Women; Environmental and Climate Change Sub-Committees.

Canada is probably the most multi-cultural country in the world and I expect that there are members in CFUW who have been personally impacted or know someone who has been impacted by the tragedy and continuing chaos in Beirut. CFUW has posted a message of sympathy to our sisters in Lebanon on the GWI Discussion Board and I extend my personal sympathies to any of you who have been impacted.

Finally, I have joked that I will be the ‘invisible’ President if the pandemic continues too long. Travel is restricted but I do hope to get to speak to all our Club Presidents over the next while and welcome an invitation to ‘meet’ members even if virtually.

Take care and keep safe.

Kathryn

Call for Members to Join New CFUW Communications Committee

On August 6, 2020, the Board of Directors approved the creation of a new Communications Committee. The need for this Committee arises from the Mediator’s Report. Read more about the Communications Committee and how to apply here. The deadline is on August 26, 2020.
Call for Members to Join CFUW Nominations and Resolutions Committees and Sub-Committees
We are encouraging members to fill out an Expression of Interest form for the CFUW Nominations Committee and Resolutions Committee and the Sub-Committees for the 2020-2021 year. View the form here.

Election of Victoria Grabb to V.P. Prairies

We are excited to announce that Victoria Grabb is the new Vice President for CFUW Prairies. Victoria has an extensive and successful background and we look forward to her using her expertise in her new role as V.P. Prairies. See her resume here.

Departure of CFUW Advocacy Coordinator, Yasmin Strautins

It is with regret that we tell you that Yasmin Strautins, our Advocacy Coordinator, has resigned and will be leaving CFUW on August 24, 2020. Yasmin has been with CFUW since November, 2018 and has made significant contributions to our advocacy work, particularly on child care, Beijing +25, Indigenous issues and social media.

We wish Yasmin great success in the next chapter of her life.

IWD 2020 Donations to Interpares

CFUW members donated a total of $1,520 to Interpares for our International Women’s  Day Fundraising Project for 2020. The project was “Promoting Justice for Women in Antioquia, Colombia,” which was supported by Inter Pares and implemented by their Colombian counterpart Humanas.  Inter Pares is an organization that has worked for over 40 years with organizations from around the world to build peace, advance justice and globalize equality.

The IWD Project for 2021 will be announced shortly.
