Hi <<First Name>>,

Thank for  your support in keeping our Club going overthe last five months. It is an exciting week as we are able to expand the range of bowls being played and open the bar.

We look forward to seeing you at the Club and having a drink and a catch up!

I sincerely hope that you are staying healthy, safe and happy!

The Bar is Open

To clarify, the bar will be open as soon as we receive stock! Distriliq (our supplier) has obviously been completely overwhelmed with orders, but has told us that they will do their level best to get stock to us today.

The details of what is and is not allowed in terms of the change to level 2 are still not completely clear and we may have to make changes on the fly over the next few days. Please work with us as we try to interpret conflicting advice, news stories and regulations.

For now the following is being put in place. Changes will be put on the WhatsApp group as and when they are made.

Bowling

There are not a lot of changes around bowling yet. The major difference so far is that Trips is also allowed, but all the other regulations are still in place, including having to book in advance, wearing masks, being screened before entering the club, etc.

Opening Hours

The regulations say that the bar may be open until 10 pm, but also imposed a curfew from 10 pm. This means that the bar will close at 9 pm at the latest every night to allow time for Mwiza to get home before 10.

Accordingly, the earliest booking time from Tuesday to Thursday has been changed to 13:15. Bookings can still be made from noon on Saturdays.

Visiting the Club

If you have not booked to bowl, you can still visit the Club to have drinks at the bar - but we are limited to a total of 50 people at the Club. This is in total and includes the Greens, balcony, bar, etc.

Anyone who has booked to bowl will obviously take preference in this regard, so please be aware that you may be turned away if you arrive for a drink and there are too many people already on the premises.

Screening

Mwiza has been in charge of screening anyone entering the Club while the bar has been closed. We are working on alternative solutions for this, but for now Mwiza will be undertaking both duties. This means that if he is serving someone at the bar, you will need to wait outside the door until he is available to register your arrival, take your temperature, etc.

Please be patient and work with everyone in this regard!

Social Distancing

We are supposed to put measures in place to prevent anyone from being within 1.5m of anyone else at the Club. This includes in the bar and on the balcony. Please be responsible about this!!!

If you are waiting to order at the bar, don't crowd up against each other. You all know how to queue with spacing between you! Please do so.

On the balcony there cannot be more than 4 people on the benches.... If you want to sit outside, take a chair around to the braai area and space yourselves out - and put your chair away when you are done.

We are trying the "everyone is an adult" approach! Please work with each other, respect each other, and help us keep this simple.

Drinking on the Green

There is no doubt that everyone loves to be able to bowl while having a drink - and the sight of our members bowling with a quart in hand is synonymous with Mowbray.

However. please refrain from doing so!

Please note the following:
  • Our liquor license does not actually cover drinks being allowed on the Greens
  • The rule about having to wear masks on the Greens has not changed
  • We are getting frequent drive-by inspections by police

There will no better invitation for a more detailed inspection of what we are doing than if someone driving by sees members walking around the Greens with drink in hand and no mask!

Please separate bowling from drinking for now and lets not risk having to close the Club for any period of time because of contraventions of the regulations!

Club Championships

The Club Championships are resuming with immediate effect!

It is almost time to start next seasons Championships - and we are allowed to have Singles and Pairs competitions - so we are moving forward.

You can catch up on what the current status of each competition is on our website

Please contact your opposition, make some plans and lets get the competition finished and have some winners to celebrate!

PS - no, no Green Fees are payable if you playing in a Club Competition.

Bowls Days

With some planning and innovation it is still possible to schedule competitive bowls against other Clubs - and with Taz driving things, a lot is happening!

Gordon's Bay

This Sunday (16 August) Mowbray will be heading to Gordon's Bay for a Pairs day. 10 teams from each Club will play two games on the day.

Taz announced the plans for this day on WhatsApp and then accepted the first 10 pairs teams that entered.

Representing Mowbray will be:
  • Bruno and Carolyn
  • Davie and Jennifer
  • Taz and Mark D
  • Simon and Wendy
  • Becky and Budge
  • Darryl and Barbs
  • Ian and Candice H
  • Candice G and Penelope
  • Tria and Claire
  • Richard and Peter T

Reserves are Paul and Tilly.

Milnerton

On Sunday 30 August, Milnerton will be sending 10 Pairs teams to our Club. We will be playing two games of 2-4-2, one each in the morning and the afternoon. There will be burgers and salads served for lunch between the two games. Entry is R100 per player.

There were some members who did not like the first come - first served approach we used for the Gordon's Bay day, so we are going with a different system this time.

If you are available and interested in playing, please send a message to Taz by Wednesday evening. On Thursday, we will divide the names evenly into Skips and Leads and draw Pairs for the day.

Please note though, that we are planning on drawing 9 pairs with this system (and not 10). Subject to no objections being received, we will appoint a team from the Committee as well. Please let anyone on the Committee know if you are not happy with this.

New Member Applications

In terms of our Constitution, member applications have to be displayed on the Notice Board for 14 days after being approved by the Committee.

So, here are the new Member Applications that we have received. If you have comments about any of them please submit them in writing to one of the Committee Members.

Finances

Five months into lockdown restrictions, with no bar sales, no event bookings, and no competitions - but we are still keeping our heads above water!

Thank you to all of you for your commitment to the Club and your assistance in keeping us alive.

If you are still behind with your payments for Subscription Fees or other expenses, please make a payment now. We are relying on you to keep the Club alive.

If you are unable to make payments, please contact either Paul Rist or Mark D for a private chat to make payment arrangements. Mowbray is a Club where we all support each other and we are happy to assist with making whatever plans are necessary to help.

Mowbray Raffle

We are launching a Club Raffle next week and are working on getting as many prizes together as possible. We already have contributions from Taz, Lorraine P and Tria

If you have anything that you can contribute, please let Taz or Tria know ASAP. We would like to have as many prizes as possible so anything and everything would be greatly appreciated!

Green Upgrades

Bruno has kindly volunteered to head up a sub-committee to meet with a number of experts across Cape Town about upgrades to our greens.

The main focus is on the following:
  • Levelling of the A green
  • Building up the banks on the B green
  • Investigating options around the roots under the B green

We'll keep you updated over the next few months - and thank Bruno for his time and effort.

Tournament Cancellations

It may be redundant to announce what is almost definitely obvious to everyone, but to make 100% sure that everyone is aware:

We have made the official decision to cancel the following events and tournaments:
  • 2020 Lucky Cup
  • 2020 Mowbray Midweek Trips
  • 2020 Mowbray Novice Trips
  • 2020 Awards Dinner

If we are able to host a tournament later this year - then we will do so - but will give it a new name and format.
