Hot Off the Press

I love getting the cover story!  Here’s the latest from Connect, the member magazine of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.  Once travel is back on our agenda and we’re able to visit my family in Pittsburgh, I want to take a field trip to visit The Wilds in Ohio. It sounds like a very cool place.

My Inner Librarian is Finally Fulfilled

I’ve wanted a sidewalk library forever.  After seeing a shiny red recycled newspaper box in front of a home a few blocks away, I knew I’d found my ideal book repository.  I went to Etsy and found a guy in PA who makes them, and ordered a large, bright blue version.

It arrived right when we were being told to shut down, hole up, and stop touching everything and everybody. I didn’t want anyone to contract a potentially terminal illness from coming in contact with a library or a book, so the box sat empty on our screened porch for 4 months.
Last month I decided it was safe to give the library a try. John installed it at the edge of the sidewalk; and I filled it and included a bottle of hand sanitizer. Books regularly disappear and the new ones that take their place range from run-of-the-mill mysteries and romance novels to In the Closet of the Vatican: Power, Homosexuality and Hypocrisy, and a recent addition, What If? Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions. It’s a hoot to swap books with such an eclectic bunch of bookworms. If you know where we live, please visit the Collins Library.

Words from Friends

Enjoy the latest from my essay-writing buddy, Marshall.

This one made me nostalgic for the many games of bouncy outs we played in our side yard during our growing up years.

Website Designer Goes AWOL

Note: the subject of this essay is NOT the wonderful Sharon McCammon of Communicasting, Inc. who designed my current site as well as this newsletter!

This essay is was published in Angie's List Magazine in September 2010.

Noise is Relative

I’ve mentioned that air pods have been a great investment since John and I started sharing an office. I’ve also discovered the perfect thing to listen to on those air pods, and it’s not music.  www.mynoise.net is a free, online collection of background sounds, and it has been a life-changing Hallelujah! discovery for me. I’ve found that Rain on a Tent is the best soundtrack for my writing days, even though the site recommends it if you need help falling asleep. It doesn’t make me sleepy, but it does allow me to focus in a way I’m not always able to. Check it out!
