On Aug. 11, 224 staff and faculty from across the University of Toronto’s (U of T) tri-campus community attended IT@UofT Tech Talk. This virtual event offered an opportunity for the University’s Information Technology (IT) community to stay connected, receive updates and ask questions about IT at U of T. The event was hosted by the Information Technology Services (ITS) department via Microsoft Live Events.

It’s been over two years since U of T completed a massive upgrade to its student information system. How did the system handle peak enrolment this year? On July 31, more than 35,000 Faculty of Arts & Science students logged in to ACORN during the largest enrolment day for U of T.

|
Connect+Learn sessions provide staff with training on common technologies and applications. The next sessions are:
- Aug. 26, 12 p.m.: This session is intended for SharePoint site owners and administrators who want to learn about a particular feature and/or need some assistance with content.
- Aug. 27, 12 p.m.: Learn about FindTime, an add-on for Outlook that assists in finding potential meeting times for you and attendees, then allows everyone to vote and quickly set a meeting.

Network service for international students

To provide lower latency connectivity for international students living in mainland China, ITS launched the Alibaba Cloud Enterprise Network (CEN) last month. It allows students to access the U of T network and resources, such as Quercus, Collaborate Ultra and more.

U of T transforms business processes with SAP
|
|
The University’s autumn-2019 SAP Administrative Management System migration paves the way for its SAP S/4HANA migration, planned for late 2020. Meanwhile, it has transformed IT processes, saving up to two days of time in some cases.

Policy: non-medical masks or face coverings
|
|
The University is implementing this temporary Policy requiring non-medical masks or face coverings to be worn indoors in common-use spaces on University property. This Policy is consistent with the approach taken in City of Toronto By-Law 541-2020 and City of Mississauga By-Law 0169-2020.

New campus maps tool launched in August
|
|
In early August, U of T launched a new campus maps tool. With detailed renderings and simplified navigation, the maps will help incoming students get acquainted with our campuses, even from a distance. New layers of information will also help prepare everyone for their eventual return to campus.

Virtual field trips, digital labs & global colleagues
|
|
U of T professors are planning for a fall semester unlike any other, including virtual field trips to Bonnechere Caves and digital labs that allow students to observe their experiments at a nano-level. About 90 per cent of undergraduate courses give students the option of studying online. Read more

Accessibility and Language
Aug. 28, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
This session will provide participants with a foundational knowledge on how communication and language can create barriers to accessibility, and how to address these barriers. Register (UTORid required).
Virtual ITS Town Hall
Sept. 10, 10-11 a.m.
This will be an opportunity to connect with ITS colleagues. Presentation by CIO Bo Wandschneider with Q&A session to follow. (Invitation only).
