Welcome to the More or Less premiere!

The COVID-19 pandemic has given us all the opportunity to re-think what we want normal to be. For some, job/income loss or uncertainty has been the motivation to find new ways to earn a living, or even to question the relentless drive to earn more and more, often missing out on what is personally valuable in order to achieve someone else’s expectations of success.

People are slowing down – realizing that staying at home, working in the garden, or doing something with your family, can be more enjoyable than rushing off somewhere in the pursuit of artificial entertainment.  The possibility of suddenly losing a loved one to a virus that was not even on our radar a year ago has served as an abrupt reminder to treasure the time we have with our family and friends. We are starting to question how we spend our time and money and to live more in the moment.

Recovering from a serious respiratory illness back in March, which was most likely COVID, inspired me to start making facemasks as my bit to slow the spread of the coronavirus. At first, just using whatever materials I had on hand and following instructions on a YouTube video, I made dozens of masks to give to local organizations. And I continued to perfect my design. Soon, people who could afford to pay for them, started asking for my masks, and before I knew it, I was putting all of my creativity and experience as an entrepreneur, into running a mask-making business from my living room.

Meanwhile, my co-venture with Chris Scott, marketing and selling his easy-to-assemble I WOOD kits for furnishings and structures, is also starting to take off. As people realize that we cannot rely on overseas companies to make everything we need, there is a groundswell of interest in building our own stuff. The I WOOD kits are the perfect place to get started and I’ll be telling you more about them soon.

Similar start-up stories are being played out throughout our country. This growth in innovative cottage industries is just one unseen benefit to come out of the dark COVID cloud. We are realizing that the new normal could be a lot nicer than the old one!
