Letter from the Rector
Hello friends,

This was a great week of COVID ministry!  Friday I worked on the sermon and got to go to Melissa Morrell's backyard to have a distanced first conversation about the 2021 budget.  Saturday was more work on the sermon and catching up on e-mails.  Two great Sunday services - over Zoom and then in Susan Folk's beautiful backyard.  Her lovely housemate, a teacher, attended also so we got the great experience of welcoming someone!  It also was amusingly a service where almost everyone present was a teacher.  Monday was light but some calls and some last minute business to wrap up - I'm working this week solid so I can take a few days next week on the coast with Aaron and Moses for Moses's birthday.  Tuesday was our podcast group, with another heartfelt and open conversation, and then Vestry.  Yesterday was staff meeting, with some good plans and hopes, and various prep and wrap-ups from Vestry.  Today I had the absolutely ecstatic experience of spending most of the day making pastoral calls!  Bea Jackson is permitted to have non-family visitors at Ida Culver now, and I was able to make an appointment and be reunited with her from six feet apart.  Then I drove up to Marysville to eat lunch in John and Mary Lou's gorgeous backyard.  Then home to a phone call in the driveway and now to prep for tonight's book group.  Tomorrow is Finance Committee and odds and ends.  Saturday will be making sure the next week is set up so I can leave with a clear plate Friday the 21st with my fam.  As Aaron and I have been starting to sort through next divorce steps, one of the things we've done is made commitments to things we will always do together as a family, and one of them is this coast trip in August.  Usually we would go to Sitka for Moses's birthday, but this year we are returning to the place we went last year (bring in our own food, direct access to the beach, no people contact) as part of his birthday celebration.

Rev. Chris McPeak's birthday is August 21st, too, so please mark your calendars and wish him a happy one.

I can't tell you how delightful it is to be making socially distanced visits and to be reconnecting in worship outdoors.  Let's keep this up while the sun shines!

With love,
Shelly

Christ Church acknowledges that we gather on the land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish people, who are a people still living.

Christ Church discretionary money has gone and will continue to go to pay rent to the Duwamish, to acknowledge that our institution participated in the removal of ancestral owners of this land, and to begin to make material repair to those who have been harmed.

Christ Church encourages individual worshippers to likewise offer this form of confession and sacred amends at realrentduwamish.org. All funds go directly to Duwamish Tribal Services (DTS) to support the revival of Duwamish culture and the vitality of the Duwamish Tribe.

Report from the Vestry
VESTRY REPORT A Vestry meeting was held virtually on August 11, 2020. We discussed the book Emergent Strategy by Adrienne Maree Brown and reviewed the video Gather, Transform, Send.
The  Vestry unanimously passed a resolution to allow Christ Church to purchase Audiovisual equipment and accessories needed  to begin live streaming services.
IA second engineering company, Holmberg Mechanical, will meet with members of the Regathering Committee on August 12th.The air flow in Christ Church will be assessed at that time for improvements needed during  Covid 19. The first engineering company has not as yet submitted an estimate.
There have been two well attended, safe outdoor services held  in backyards  of parishioners  in the last two weeks. The services will continue during good weather and a reservation is necessary online.
Homecoming Sunday will be September 13th. Livestream services will begin on that day.
Street Chaplaincy needs you!  The Street Chaplaincy wagon has been faithfully making the rounds through the U District on Sunday afternoons, even through the days of COVID lockdowns.  We've simplified the process down to handing out a pre-packed bag, plus a choice of underwear size and candy preference, to minimize the amount of close contact needed, and volunteers are supplied with masks, gloves and hand sanitizer to keep themselves safe.  So far, the process has been going smoothly.

We've kept it going with 4 volunteers, alternating weeks in two groups of 2, but we could use some reinforcements, particularly after some recent schedule changes squeezing Sunday hours for 2 of our volunteers.

There are two ways to help: 1) we could use folks to walk with the wagon on Sundays, or, 2) to pre-pack the bags sometime during the week.  We're happy to train first-time volunteers as well. If you would feel comfortable participating in this vital ministry, please contact Wes Ono (w_ono@hotmail.com) to be added to the mailing list.
Pat Hyland has paperback copies of all four books in The Dalai Lama's Cat series available for loan. They're a fun read, especially for cat people! Email Pat if you're interested.
Joys of the Week
Joys of the Week is meant as a medium to keep connected with each other during the Covid-19 outbreak, when we cannot share fellowship with each other in person. No joy is too small! If you have a joy you would like to share, please email a photo or a story to Cara at office@christchurchseattle.org.
Hello everyone,

This week I wanted to start showing you some of my things (Mr. Bubbles is busy learning how to "shake" for treats - I'm completely serious, Dom has trained him a bit with the threats...or has he trained Dom?). I've mentioned here and there that I recently began studying Japanese in earnest, as it's something I've always thought about but never done, despite my heritage and the fact that I have many Japanese things and customs that I follow in my life.

Pictured above are two sides of one fan; folding fans like this are called sensu. After a close family friend of mine died some years ago, my mom and I sorted several fans, kimono, and other dance accessories (our friend's mother was a classical Japanese dance teacher in Seattle I think in the 50s), and I think this one came from that collection.

To be completely honest with you all, I don't really know what the imagery means (other than identifying the flowers) - but I do know that they were hand-painted, and that the fan is meant to be danced, with, as there are small weights near where the ribs of the fan meet. This is so that if the fan is thrown or tossed during a dance, it will fall back into the dancer's hand in a predictable way.

I hope you all have a decent weekend!
In love and service,
Cara
