Undergraduate researcher Thalia Le shares what her virtual summer internship with the Cardiovascular Institute has been like in Dr. Bhalla's lab

Thalia Le is currently a Junior at Emory University, studying Chemistry and Quantitative Sciences. Through the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute (CVI) Summer Research Program,  she has spent this summer with Dr. Bhalla’s laboratory under the mentorship of postdoctoral fellows Ying Shi, Ph.D., and Alexandre Gaudet, MD, Ph.D. As previous studies have shown a direct role of insulin signaling in upregulating the expression level and function of sodium-glucose co-transporters 2 (SGLT2) in vivo, her virtual project seeks to elucidate this regulatory mechanism by employing single-cell RNA sequencing and pathway analysis of publicly available human and mice kidney databases, which will be important to understand the treatment of hyperglycemia, and importantly, cardiovascular and renal disease in patients with diabetes.

Although the CVI program shifted from in-person to remote due to safety precautions for COVID-19, Thalia mentioned that through the program she has gained substantial research exposure in biomedical sciences and data analysis. The experience was truly eye-opening and impactful and inspired her to change her second major to study Quantitative Sciences.
