CMSI's biennial State of the Documentary Field study, in association with the International Documentary Association (IDA), was first launched in 2016 to investigate the contemporary experiences of all documentary professionals.
The 2018 report revealed a pattern of economic hardships faced by many creators, even while it showed new trends for people of color and women. What does the scenario look like today toward building an inclusive and equitable field—with new platforms emerging every year? Where do documentary professionals make their money, and how are they funded?
Ahead of Getting Real '20, the 2020 State of the Documentary Field Study is going global. The data is crucial in helping to identify needs and opportunities, track issue trends in funding, revenue, emerging platforms, equity and representation over time and, ultimately, allow our field to plan for our collective future.
