Agri SA and SAPS take hands to address violent crime such as farm attacks and stock theft

On 28 July 2020, The South African Police Service led by Divisional Commissioner of Visible Policing, Lieutenant General MD Sempe, met with the leadership of Agri SA. The purpose was to strengthen the working relations between the organisations and to address the challenges arising from the ongoing implementation of the Revised National Rural Safety Strategy. Both organisations expressed their concerns regarding the ongoing farm attacks and general criminality affecting the citizens of the country. Several proposed initiatives were discussed. The parties expressed commitment to work together and to mobilise other agricultural unions such as the Transvaal Agricultural Union to establish an enhanced implementation of the National Rural Safety Strategy. The aim is to create an environment conducive to the reduction of serious and violent crimes such as farm attacks and stock theft. Press release. To read more, click HERE.

Organised agriculture supports the trade of livestock by ship

The Red Meat Producers Organisation (RPO), together with Agri SA, Agri Northern Cape and Agri Eastern Cape support the trade of livestock by ship if it is done ethically, and without animal abuse. These shipments should be done within the OIE standards, overseen by government as the regulatory authority. The representatives of Agri SA, the provincial affiliates and the RPO recently met in Bloemfontein under the chairmanship of Agri SA president Pierre Vercueil. There was consensus that this form of trade in livestock could raise the bar for the industry. Click HERE to read more.

FNB and RMB heed the call to improve food security in Mpumalanga

In a bid to help alleviate the scourge of hunger in South Africa, which has been exacerbated by COVID-19, RMB and FNB have donated R3 million from the FirstRand SPIRE fund to assist FoodForward South Africa (FFSA) to set up operations in the Mpumalanga province. FFSA is well respected for the important work it is doing to redirect quality, edible surplus food to vulnerable communities. By feeding thousands of South Africans that go hungry daily, hunger is relieved sustainably. The R3 million committed by RMB and FNB will be used for the initial infrastructure costs of FFSA expanding into Mpumalanga. Once at scale, FFSA would be able to feed approximately 20 000 to 25 000 people per day in this province. Press release. To read more, click HERE.

COVID-19 threat small on mechanised farms

According to Agbiz chief economist Wandile Sihlobo the South African agricultural sector has successfully harvested summer crops with minimal interruption from the pandemic so far. However, farmers and agribusinesses had to adjust their usual work processes to comply with health regulations to limit the spread of the virus. In October the focus will shift to planting activity of the 2020/2021 summer grains, oilseeds and various horticultural products. This will happen while the COVID-19 infection numbers are close to their peak, with the hotspots being the Western Cape, Gauteng, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. These provinces also account for 60% of South Africa's agricultural output, which raises questions about whether the surge in infections could affect the planting season negatively. Restitution Commission looking for new settlement models

The Commission on the Restitution of Land Rights invited Agbiz and several of its members to a half-day consultation session on new settlement models for land restitution on 5 August 2020. Whilst there is a lot of work currently being done in parallel on the Agricultural and Agro-processing Master Plan, the Comprehensive Producer Development Support Policy and blended finance models for agricultural development and land redistribution, it is heartening to see that land restitution is not being left behind. Click HERE to read the article in which Agbiz head of Legal Intelligence Theo Boshoff gives feedback on the consultation session.
