Website updates highlight Indiana dairy farmers

Two new webpages have been added to the WinnersDrinkMilk.com line up, and they’re showcasing dairy farmers across the state.
  • The new section of the “Farm Life” tab allows visitors to “Meet a Hoosier Dairy Farmer”, and learn about the animal care and sustainable farming practices farmers use to for their cows, land, and communities. If you would like to feature your farm or a farm in your area, contact Allie Rieth (rieth@winnersdrinkmilk.com).
  • With the many changes to this year’s Indianapolis 500 race, ADAI chose to honor the past Milk People that have played a part in the iconic drink of milk in Victory Circle. The “Milk Tradition” page explains the history of this honor, and features memories from the dairy farmers who have handed off the bottle to the winning driver. This year, the alumni Milk People were presented with signs that designate the farm as part of the storied tradition. Kim Minich of Triple M Dairy shared what this means to her family farm with Northwest Indiana Times.

Continued COVID-19 School Support

Our partners at GENYOUth are working tirelessly to raise support for school meals throughout the country.  Over the last two months in Indiana, GENYOUth has secured grants for 32 additional schools, now impacting 48 total schools since the spring.  At $2,000 per grant, that’s nearly $100,000 in private support for schools just in Indiana!  Requested funds are being used to purchase equipment for serving, storing and transporting cold perishables.  The need is great, so learn more, donate or apply at http://home.genyouthnow.org/.

Checkoff Updates

  • June dairy product exports cap strong first half of 2020: Despite a highly disrupted trade environment, June capped a six-month period that saw U.S. dairy product exports post double-digit growth. On the other hand, exports of hay dipped to a five-month low, while exports of dairy replacement heifers fell to the lowest level in more than four years. The strong dairy exports weren’t enough to offset agricultural imports, leading to a fourth straight “deficit” month for U.S. ag trade.
  • Indiana graduate student wins NMPF scholarship: NMPF announced the recipients of its 2020 National Dairy Leadership Scholarship awards. The awards support the next generation of dairy leaders and researchers and are open to qualified graduate students who are actively pursuing dairy-related fields of study. NMPF this year awarded scholarships to 3 students, including Indiana’s own Conor McCabe, M.S. Animal Science at Purdue University.
  • Guidelines news good for dairy, science: National Dairy Council’s Dr. Michelle Slimko says the main takeaway for dairy following the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee’s scientific report is the science behind its role in nutrition and health remains strong.
  • Security must be part of farm plan: The Animal Ag Alliance offers tips on farm security and identifying suspicious activity, a must in a time when activists have their sights set on agriculture.
