AUGUST 2020 EDITION

REMOTE LEARNING FIVE DAYS/WEEK
Helping to Close the Learning Gap

North Marin Community Services has remained open throughout the summer, and on August 20th our teachers are ready to launch remote learning to 60 students, ages Kindergarten through Middle School. We have aligned our staff and partnership with Novato Unified School District to ensure that all children have the opportunity to succeed academically. NMCS remains committed to supporting children by providing an enriching environment within a structured stable cohort with caring, professional and permitted teachers. This out-of-classroom education structure located at our 680 Wilson Ave. Center will help close the learning gap for students in Novato.

Our program is being offered at a nominal fee for the majority of our families – most who receive scholarships through the CA Dept of Education. These scholarships are essential so that low income working families can remain the workforce, while their children are in an inclusive, enriching and safe environment.

Unfortunately, because of the COVID-19 health and safety regulations, our student cohorts are smaller with increased teaching costs. This year, our Child Development Program is projecting a considerable deficit and we are fundraising to support this essential safety net program. Thank you for joining us in these efforts to invest in the educational success of all children.

Today, we would like to share with you one family who sought our help. This family of three lives in a two-bedroom apartment in Novato. Mom stays home to care for their six-year-old son who has Down syndrome. Dad had two jobs. On March 16th when COVID-19 Shelter in Place occurred, unfortunately he was laid off from both restaurants that he worked in. The family recently opened up their small apartment to provide shelter for their relatives (a family of three). This family has never received assistance from us before, but turned to North Marin Community Services when their savings had been used up for rent and they were facing food insecurity. Our Case Manager successfully qualified the family for services, and was able to offer two months of emergency rental assistance. In addition, they were immediately enrolled in our Tuesday Food Pantry to receive weekly nutritious food.

Your generosity allows us to continuing helping families like this one.
