ASSITEJ Canada: New Board, New Voices

It's been an unprecedented year, and a strange time for all arts organizations as we gear up for new seasons. As a member of the newly elected board of ASSITEJ Canada, I speak on behalf of all of my colleagues: we want you to feel like we're listening and reaching across our vast geography to continue having conversations, fostering relationships, and interrogating our ever-expanding forms.
Next month we will roll out a reimagined newsletter format, complete with spotlights on Canadian companies making exciting work for young people, and opportunities for all of us to connect with one another in meaningful ways. It's one of the silver linings to this complex era: we have normalized face-to-face meetings online in a whole new way.
And of course, we welcome anyone who wants to help lend their voice, or be featured within these new monthly newsletters - don't hesitate to contact us at assitejcanada@gmail.com.

ASSITEJ Canada: Nouveau conseil d'administration, nouvelles voix
Ce fut une année sans précédent, et c’est une période étrange pour toutes les organisations artistiques alors que nous nous préparons pour les prochaines saisons. En tant que membre du conseil d'administration nouvellement élu d'ASSITEJ Canada, je m’adresse à vous au nom de tous mes collègues : nous souhaitons que vous ayez le sentiment que nous sommes à votre écoute, par devers notre vaste territoire, pour que les conversations et les échanges continuent et que les relations soient mise de l’avant pour interroger notre création et ses nouvelles formes, toujours plus nombreuses.
Le mois prochain, nous lancerons une lettre d'information dans un tout nouveau format, qui mettra en lumière les compagnies canadiennes qui font un travail passionnant pour les jeunes, et qui nous donnera à tous l'occasion de nouer des liens significatifs. C'est l'un des points positifs de cette époque complexe : nous avons normalisé les réunions face à face en ligne d'une manière totalement nouvelle.
Et bien sûr, nous accueillons tous ceux qui souhaitent nous aider à faire entendre leur voix ou à figurer dans ces nouvelles lettres d'information mensuelles - n'hésitez pas à nous contacter à l'adresse assitejcanada@gmail.com.

Please find below a posting from ASSITEJ Germany for their International Directors’ Seminar. You will note that each ASSITEJ Centre has been asked to nominate a director to be considered for the seminar. To determine the nominee for ASSITEJ Canada, we will be assembling a jury composed of two Board members and four independent members of ASSITEJ Canada. Jury members will not be eligible to apply for the seminar.
For those interested in applying, the required application materials are:

- Resume
- Cover letter
- A response to the seminar theme located below, no more than 250 words or half a page
The assessment criteria for determining the ASSITEJ Canada nominee will be:
- A sustained interest in creating work for young audiences
- An understanding of why this seminar is valuable to the artist’s work at this phase of their career
- An understanding of what the artist hopes to learn from this seminar
* Due to ASSITEJ Germany’s statement that the seminar is conducted in English only, the ability to speak and understand the language is a prerequisite. ASSITEJ Canada will, however, accept applications in both French and English.

Nous vous invitons à prendre connaissance de l’invitation ci-dessous provenant d’ASSITEJ Allemagne au sujet du “Directors in TYA- An International Exchange (International Directors’ Seminar)”. Chaque centre national d’ASSITEJ s’est vu confié le soin de proposer pour ce séminaire un(e) metteur(e) en scène provenant de son territoire. ASSITEJ Allemagne choisira les participants parmi les candidatures soumises par les centres nationaux.
Afin de déterminer qui sera le candidat proposé par ASSITEJ Canada, nous lançons un appel de candidatures et mettons sur pied un jury qui analysera les candidatures reçues. Il sera composé de deux membres de conseil d’administration et de quatre membres d’ASSITEJ Canada et de moi-même. Les membres du jury ne pourront pas participer à ce concours.
Ceux qui souhaitent soumettre leur candidature, doivent fournir le matériel suivant :

- Un résumé de leur parcours professionnel

- L’intérêt soutenu de l’artiste pour la création en direction des jeunes publics
- Le grand intérêt du séminaire dans le parcours artistique actuel du candidat
- Les savoirs que l’artiste retirera de ce séminaire
Puisque ASSITEJ Allemagne annonce que ce séminaire se déroulera en anglais seulement, l’artiste doit pouvoir comprendre l’anglais et communiquer dans cette langue. Toutefois, ASSITEJ Canada recevra les candidatures dans les deux langues officielles.

A topic to start from in 2021 - Apply for DIRECTORS IN TYA if Planet B triggers an idea, a utopia, a phantasy you would like to share
The idea of a “Planet B” will be the starting point of our work: As humans we make plans and if one plan does not turn out, we come up with another, an alternative, a Plan B. Young people all over the world have recently confronted adults – parents, politicians, business leaders and artists – with a simple truth “There is no Planet B”.
As humans we live on one planet, the earth, and, for as long as we can remember, have wondered about other planets and other species or whether we could also live elsewhere in the universe. There have been excursions to the Moon and to Mars and many stories play with the idea of coming from outer space or moving to a new world. But is there a Planet B? And if there was, what would it mean?
Today’s young people ask all of us to reconsider our choices. We need to question thoughtless consumption and the unequal distribution of limited resources. We need to make new plans for a better future on our Planet A.
We are confronted with universal questions of justice, responsibility and freedom. These questions concern our audiences of all generations as much as they concern us as artists and theatre makers.

On July 14, the Canada Council for the Arts launched “Reimagine the Arts”— a survey to invite your input to shape the Council’s next five-year strategic plan. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the thousands of individuals and organizations that have taken the time to complete the survey. This is an important first step towards shaping a plan that reflects the current reality faced by artists and arts organizations and that looks ahead to how the Council can help restart, reinvigorate, and reimagine the arts for the benefit of all Canadians.
We encourage you to participate so that those working for young audiences are heard and incorporated into Council's plan. We kindly remind you that the last day to do so is Friday, August 21, 2020.
Le 14 juillet, le Conseil des arts du Canada a lancé « Réimaginer les arts », un sondage pour vous inviter à donner votre avis sur son prochain plan stratégique quinquennal. Nous aimerions profiter de cette occasion pour remercier les milliers de personnes et d’organismes qui ont pris le temps de répondre au sondage. C’est une première étape importante pour élaborer un plan qui reflète la réalité actuelle des artistes et des organismes artistiques, et qui envisage la façon dont le Conseil peut aider à relancer, à revigorer et à réimaginer les arts au profit de tous les Canadiens et de toutes les Canadiennes.
On vous encourage de participer alors que seuls qui travaillent pour les jeunes peuvent êtres entendus et incorporés au plan du conseil. Nous aimerions vous rappeler que le dernier jour pour le faire est le vendredi 21 août 2020.

TYA/USA (the American ASSITEJ) has launched a platform for award-winning playwright Idris Goodwin to present five short plays to spark conversation and serve as a catalyst for action. Each of these short works, written to be read across the multi-generational spectrum, offer different insights about disconnects in racial conversation and the Black experience in America. Goodwin hopes that this release also provides a model for open-source theater and storytelling, in which the connection between playwright and community is direct.

TYA/USA (ASSITEJ États-Unis) a inauguré une plateforme pour le dramaturge lauréat de plusieurs prix Idris Goodwin afin de présenter cinq courtes pièces pour susciter la conversation et servir de catalyseur à des actions directes. Chacune de ces courtes pièces, écrites pour être lues par un large éventail de génération, offre un point de vue différent sur les ruptures dans la conversation raciale et l'expérience des Noirs en Amérique. M. Goodwin espère que ces publications fourniront également un modèle ouvert et en libre redistribution (Open source) pour le théâtre et les récits, dans lequel le lien entre le dramaturge et la communauté est direct.
