This year, the CTE team is redoubling our efforts to advance equitable and anti-racist teaching practices, and this month's newsletter connects you to important resources on the topic, information on our upcoming events and programs, and the latest CTE team news. |

Power and Microaggressions in the Classroom

This workshop aims to help you develop and refine the skills needed to carefully respond to insensitive comments and incidents of bias and racism in the moment they occur. You will work together to identify and anticipate critical moments, learn from role models, and use a framework for developing your own impromptu responses.

UVA Acts - Inclusive Teaching Toolkit: Lectures

In this interactive, online performance, you'll hear stories from Gene, Vanessa, and Claire about their experiences with belonging and belonging uncertainty in their education. Consider how small changes and psychosocial interventions during lectures can allow students to feel they belong in your classroom, at UVA, and in your field of research—and learn why belonging matters in the first place.

Join a facilitated c3Design session this fall for support (re)designing an upcoming course. We are offering multiple synchronous sessions from October 12-November 13. Meetings will take place once a week at the same time over the five-week period.

Registration is open until Sunday, October 4. There is no cost to participate. You can expect to spend 15-20 hours outside of the scheduled meetings (re)designing your course. Email cte-uva@virginia.edu with questions.

We will also offer c3Design sessions December 7-18 and January 4-15. Over the two-week period, instructors will participate in five, 90-minute meetings. All meetings for your cohort will be at the same time each day.
Registration will be announced later this semester.

CTE 2020-2021 Faculty Fellows
We are accepting applications for our CTE Faculty Fellows program. As a Faculty Fellow, you will share your teaching experiences and expertise with colleagues, expand your own pedagogical knowledge, and contribute to fostering a culture of teaching and inclusive excellence at UVA. Fellows devote at minimum 4 hours/week and will be compensated for their work.
Applications will be accepted until the end of the calendar year and reviewed on a rolling basis. Email Michael Palmer at mpalmer@virginia.edu with questions.

Applications will open Tuesday, October 6 for a reimagined version of our Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) program. Rather than collecting data from students in their course(s), which may be difficult at this time, participants will develop a research question related to their course that can be answered using secondary data (e.g., student demographics, grades). The program will begin in December 2020. Look out for our announcement next week!

Matthew (Matt) Burgess came on board in April as our Assistant Director of Learning Technology Initiatives. He works with colleagues across Grounds to build and maintain UVA's learning technology ecosystem, exploring new and existing tools for teaching and learning and sharing information and opportunities with faculty, staff, and students. Matt is responsible for the development and management of the Learning Tech site, which launched ahead of the fall semester.

Jessica (Jess) Taggart joined the team in May as our Postdoctoral Research Associate. She leads our SoTL Faculty Learning Community and supports the SoTL Scholars and Curriculum (Re)design programs. Before recently graduating from UVA with her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology, she served as a CTE Graduate Student Associate, conducting consultations and supporting the SoTL Scholars program.

Seats at the Table - Community Screening and Conversation

Join the CTE's Andrew Kaufman and PBS for an online screening of Seats at the Table, a documentary depicting his community engagement course, Books Behind Bars. Take a look inside his class, where UVA students meet with residents at a maximum-security juvenile correctional center to explore questions of meaning, value, and social justice through conversations about Russian literature.
Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion featuring Kaufman, New York Times columnist and UVA alumnus Jamelle Bouie ('09), UVA alumna Kelsey Bowman ('17), and former correctional center student Bradley Brewer.
