It’s not unheard of to use dogs for their incredible scent skills, whether that’s to detect drugs, weapons and even diseases like malaria and cancer. But can they sniff out Covid-19?
- Medical Detection Dogs, an organization that trains dogs to recognize human disease through scent, is carrying out work to see if these bio-detection dogs can smell Covid-19
- Currently, the organization is collecting samples by sending out clothing and masks to National Health Service workers in the UK, who will wear them for a certain amount of time before returning them to the lab for analysis
- Six dogs are currently undergoing training. If they can smell Covid-19 on the samples, the trial will progress
