Greetings –

This diagram by Adam Grant is accurate and compelling. As someone who started MANY personal projects (record label, poster series, and content collaborations) I can relate:

Scale is top of mind recently.

I don’t know that public or academic discourse is paying enough attention to the ways in which scale (as language) determines the way we think.

On the most basic level, I have long been wondering the digital waste (servers, work hours, funding) generated by scale-seeking startups, based on the possibility of getting rich (scaling resources).

Time played a foundational part in scale. This is true for businesses’ dogma of short-termness as it is to the entangled nature of environmental thinking and long-term innovation.

OpenAI is again making waves in the AI world with GPT-3, a more useful version of natural language processing. It seems that any development in AI, moves the needle yet again in the expectation for intelligence we put on our computers. It is telling, and worth understanding that people think algorithms can be ’smart’, thoughtful or context-aware.

It is like throwing your worst boxer into the biggest fight, and then complaining when they lose, or pull off a dirty trick.

I suspect we need a psychologist, or a behavioral scientist to study this phenomenon. Kevin Kelly once told me in conversation that we like assigning intelligence to the things we understand the least. That is that the best explanation I can hold onto on our obsession with thinking that computers can think.

OpenAI’s new language generator GPT-3 is shockingly good—and completely mindless

These days of sameness, and endless Zoom meetings require self-care, and a more intentional design of digital habits. I found that playing music on low volume while on Zoom is a simple trick to get to a more contemplative, listening state of mind,. If you’re craving a change of scenery I recommend Window Swap.
