As we continue to move forward with what our return to school year will look like, we understand that there can be a host of emotions. Our hope is that by providing clear communication we can continue to have a sense of calm surrounding our SCM community. As difficult as this crisis is to navigate, we feel that the strength in our amazing school will carry us through.
During the past seven weeks, we have had over fifty children on campus. We have had a wonderful and safe time. We have one more week of summer school and then will switch gears into preparing for our fall start on September 1st.
In the weeks leading up to our return to school, communication is vital. While we have been able to share information in this Weekly Newsletter and are continuing to offer Virtual Updates on Wednesdays, we understand that some families still have questions. Please feel free to reach out to us. Also, if you are an elementary or Wavecrest family and have not had a chance to fill out our Distance Learning Survey, then please do so now.
As we mentioned last week, the elementary and Wavecrest programs will be staring out in 100% Distance Learning, while the YCC and primary programs will be on site. For our elementary and Wavecrest programs to happen in person, we will need to apply for a waiver through Santa Cruz Public Health Department. At this time waivers are not being granted to schools due to the lack of testing capacity in our county. There are ongoing discussions about when our county will allow waivers to be granted. As soon as our school is able to apply for a waiver, we will do so.
Our Distance Learning plan will be released in the coming days. As a virtual Montessori learning community, our goal is to continue to inspire a love of learning, create community connection, and support the development of the whole child. We will offer a safe and loving online community in which children are supported, challenged, and guided to grow, learn, and connect with one another and the greater community and world as possible.
At the elementary level, our Distance Learning program will include daily virtual support for students, Zoom lessons with clear follow up assignments, regular planned check ins with guides, and a series of rotating workshops to inspire creativity and engagement with peers and teachers. At the Wavecrest level, our Distance Learning program will include multiple Zoom lessons in each subject weekly and daily support for students from guides. An emphasis on community and peer connection is important across the levels and guides will support children to collaborate and connect together throughout their week. Please look for the full plan coming soon.
Tuition for Distance Learning at the elementary and Wavecrest levels will be decided at our Board Meeting on August 10th. We hope to be able to send out our Distance Learning plan and tuition rates by Tuesday, August 11th.
