Dear ACLP Family,

As we near the beginning of our FSP Sessions, things are ramping up and getting exciting! The team is growing this month as we welcome our new volunteers and tutors into the ACLP family. This summer, we’ve been working hard to prepare a strong and engaging curriculum for our high school students paired with an innovative and resourceful website, interactive social media pages and researching different avenues for funding.

ACLP’s has a new free program for your high school student: Future Scholars Program (FSP).  Our program this year will be hosted virtually in partnership with Paul Robeson High School. As a program designed to empower, support and educate,  we focus our attention on cultivating both hard skills (like how to polish your resume, time management and public speaking) and soft skills (such as finding strength through your culture background, working as a team, staying motivated). FSP is a wonderful opportunity for your students to grow with life-long mentors and the entire ACLP family.

Angel Wainpa
ACLP student

The now-18-year-old was 10 when she moved to America from Liberia. Once in the US, she attended schools in 15 states (often changing every semester) before finally settling in Pennsylvania. However, out of all the places Angel has had the opportunity to call “home,” she still has much love for her native country, Liberia.

“What don’t I like about my culture?” Angel said. “It’s so unique. I always tell people ‘I’m not American, I’m African.’ Period. That’s it. I’m proud of everything that I am and everything that makes me African and Liberian, specifically. I also love my background and I wish to one day go back.”

Join a community of like-minded, hardworking, and resourceful individuals. We are a team that pushes for the common goal of promoting excellence amongst students who’ve been dealt with the short end of the stick. Our volunteers are at the heart of the program's success. Thriving undergrads, graduate students, and alumni alike forge connections with our students in a way that is mutually beneficial to both parties.  ACLP also allows for volunteers to participate in new and exciting activities amidst their busy and routinized college week. Our volunteers leave ACLP with leadership, mentoring, communication skills, and more! We are currently looking for volunteers and a lead tutor to join with our ACLP community to push towards our common goal of promoting excellence.

"Since I joined this program, I’ve come across very talented students who have benefitted so much from this engagement. I think it’s worth every investment to help provide even more resources to help these students realize their potentials.”

-Kwaku Quansah, ACLP volunteer

A rule to thrive in high school is to find a balanced schedule that fits your interests and long-term academic goals. Here’s the secret: you have to take every class you enroll in. Does that piece of advice sound as ambiguous and inapplicable as the first conversation you and your parents had about Santa Claus? I’ll explain.
Learn More about Picking the Your Right Classes

It’s your first day on campus! Your parents move you in. You set up your room, and now it’s time for them to leave. Kisses, hugs and they’re out of the door — things just got real. Is your first reaction to roll up into a ball and cry of homesickness or to nervously pop your head into one of your hallmate’s rooms, ready to take on your new life? While both reactions are certainly valid, the “Dear Freshmen” section is here to equip you with the tools you’ll need to valiantly step on campus, ready to take on everything your new life will send your way. We’re here to provide real accounts from real college students about their experiences, from tips we wish we had known to advice we're glad we did know and want to share.

Obed Antonie
Curriculum Developer

As a junior in the Wharton School studying finance and real estate management, Obed is involved in Pi Kappa Alpha, Consult for America, and the Wharton Undergraduate Real Estate Club, and he has his eyes set on working in either commercial real estate or investment banking after graduation.

Fittingly, he has spent much of the summer before his junior year preparing for the job recruitment process, which usually takes place the summer before senior year. This kind of work ethic, Obed said, was ingrained in him at a young age.
