Don’t be afraid to deviate from the script.

Over 20 years ago when I was a teenager, my family had to navigate a personal crisis that resulted in me and my 3 brothers being out of school for a whole semester. It was an unpredictable and sometimes chaotic situation that led to me, my brothers and my parents to adapt and take leadership over our education. Looking back I see the gift the crisis gave us and learned some valuable lessons on why it's important to be willing to deviate from the plan. Click the link below to read more.

New Orleans will launch ‘community learning hubs’ at libraries, rec centers to help students without internet access

As students in New Orleans get ready to start the school year remotely, the city is preparing to use public libraries and recreation facilities to host “community learning hubs” where school-aged children can access the internet in a quiet supervised environment for virtual learning. Teachers, community members urge NOLA Public Schools to require stronger protections for charter school employees

Teachers and community members on Thursday asked the Orleans Parish School Board to require stronger protections for school staff and students at its nearly 80 independent charter schools amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Louisiana, Orleans Parish 2019 graduation rates down from previous year

Years of sustained increase statewide, from 64.8 percent in the 2005-06 school year to 81.4 in 2017-2018, slipped to 78.2 percent in the 2018-19 school year. The state announced the data release by highlighting the record number of absolute students graduating. Read the article here

One week after the NOLA Public Schools district announced the delay of in-person schooling and an online start to the school year amid the COVID-19 pandemic, district staff told Orleans Parish School Board members that nearly 20 percent of city students may still lack access to the internet. Mayor's Office of Youth and Families, Forward Together New Orleans Deliver on Cash Assistance to Immigrant Families

The Mayor’s Office of Youth and Families and Forward Together New Orleans are proud to have partnered with El Pueblo Nola - NOLA Village, FREE ALAS, @ElCentrola, Our Voice - Nuestra Voz, Familias Unidas en Acción, ECCO and the New Orleans Worker’s Center for Racial Justice to distribute $500,000 to 500 immigrant families in Orleans Parish in need of cash assistance, thanks to the Open Society Foundation’s (OSF) grant for this purpose. Read the full release here
