Encouragement to Use the Catechisms

By Anna Adams

"Martin Luther put together a Small Catechism and a Large Catechism for families to study God's Word and the Bible. I thought this was a good way to show the blessing of God's Word because when he wrote the smaller catechism book, not only was he able to teach young people about God’s Word, but other pastors and parents could teach their kids using his book too. For example, after he wrote the Small Catechism he would end up using it like a student himself for the rest of his life.

Also the Small Catechism was also a small outline of what the Bible says along with a Table of Duties. At the same time, the Small Catechism was nothing new but only what was faithful to Scripture and what God’s people believed and taught for centuries. What Luther meant by a Table of Duties was a guideline from the Bible for Christian people in varied circumstances.

The two catechisms he wrote are still used to this day to help young people, parents, and anyone else who would read it, understand further into the knowledge and understanding of the Bible and of the love of God. Therefore when people went to listen to Luther and other preachers, they could enjoy letting the light of their faith shine."

You can review and grow from using the Small and Large Catechisms through regular reading. The Large Catechism is sermonic in nature, giving explanations and clarifications on biblical teaching of each topic of the Small Catechism. So the Large Catechism is a wonderful resource for teens or adults or for parents hoping to explain and teach the Small Catechism to their children.

There are some apps out there for smartphones for the Catechisms or for the entire Book of Concord. You can also use a free translation of the Book of Concord at bookofconcord.org.

IN THIS TOGETHER - MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVE

Body, mind, soul.

If you'd like to help arrange speakers and presentations at church that will help our community on the road to better health in body, mind and spirit, and help to identify resources and plan follow-up, please speak with Pastor Bondow or member Jamie Bizal.

May God use us and our humble efforts to serve his great mission of reaching and rescuing the lost and building up the body of Christ!

  1. If you plan to come in-person for worship this Sunday, feel free to use our "pre-friendship register". You don't need an actual, printed ticket to get in, of course. This is just a digital tool that helps us see the number of people planning to come, as we are limited to 50 people or less per service.
  2. YouTube channel.
  3. New Worship Series: Trust Your Gardener 8/2/20-8/23/20
  4. Sunday School resources are available for families with kids, courtesy of our amazing teachers!
  5. FRIDAY BIBLE CLASS - If you are comfortable, you may attend this class in person.  There's room for a group of about a dozen spaced out in the lobby. I'll also be on Zoom for those who want to participate from home. We'll start at 10:30am, as usual!

Feel free to reach out to Pastor Daniel at any time:

Jesus said, “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.” John 15:1-2. Scriptures abound that describe us as plants and highlight our reliance upon God and also his tender care for all our needs.

Each week in this series we will hear Jesus say something to his disciples to test and strengthen them. He is leading them to bigger and greater faith.  And we’ll also watch him demonstrate himself as the God we can depend on in every way. We are “good to grow” because of Jesus and his blessings. Believers learn to trust in Jesus and depend on him for everything.

***Calling all ushers!***

Our head usher, Joel Hahn, will be holding a mandatory meeting after church on Sunday Aug. 9th. Now that services have been held in person for a while, the weekly roster for ushers is being put back into action. It is very important that all who are able, attend this meeting, as there are some important new steps that need to e followed due to physical distancing guidelines related to COVID. We look forward to seeing you all there!
There are some changes in the air!

The basement is getting an overhaul. It's got that "new paint smell" and will soon be donning some new flooring. Due to COVID and the need for the preschool to spread out a bit this school year, the main room will be used by the preschool as a secondary space, for the entirety of the school year. The Little Lambs will be excited to see and use the new digs.

Members of the Preschool Board drafted a quick, detailed and great plan, and Church Council held a special meeting to keep it moving. Thanks to some generous donors and hardworking volunteers, the renovation will not affect our congregation's budget.

Please pray for the ministry we get to do in this building and for all the souls we get to serve. Please reach out to Tasha Boser if you can volunteer time this month. Also, if you are so moved, you may contribute financially to the project to help with costs. We are estimating that it will cost approximately $6500. Please designate your special offering (over and above your regular offering) as "basement project." THANK YOU!
IT"S CLEANING TIME!
Please try to clean near the end of the week.
If you do not feel comfortable coming out and cleaning, please send an email to livingsaviorco@gmail.com and we will adjust the schedule. Thanks!

Remember in Prayer...
  • Barbara Bisceglia - Resident of Balfour and soon-to-be-member of Living Savior - Barbara has largely recovered from her infection and off of the medication. We are still awaiting word for whether or not she has made it back to Balfour. This was long and hard, but the Lord preserved her and she gives thanks with you for healing!
  • Clint Westerberg's father, Gary - undergoing treatment due to arterial disease. He has recovered well from surgery. Thanks be to God for his well being!
  • Peterson Family (Brandon, Melissa, Dylan and Blake)- Brandon has been deployed with the Navy. Please pray for their family, as they are going through a lot of transitions.
  • Dallas McMullen -(brother of Michelle Cummings) -  Dallas is a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Armed Forces.  He is back on US soil! He is quarantined in Texas for 2 weeks and then he will be able to return home to his family after a year in Afghanistan. God be praised!
  • Pam Griffin - (Morning Westerberg's mother) - Battling cancer. Pray that the Lord might open her heart that she might see the light of God's love in Jesus.
  • Merlin Camrud - Experiencing significant pain and challenges related to his physical health. If you know Merlin, say a prayer, give him a call, and give thanks to God for preserving his life through so much adversity the last few months!
  • Susan Bondow - (Pastor's mother) - Ongoing treatment for leukemia expected to end in 2021. The treatments have been working wonderfully thus far. Still a long road ahead, but feeling beyond blessed!
Don't forget to pray for the work we are able to do together as part of the WELS (Wisconsin Ev. Lutheran Synod). Here is a suggestion:
  • WELS Ministerial Education – Lord Jesus, we praise you for keeping your promises and victoriously conquering sin and death. Thank you for giving us the privilege of sharing the message of your salvation with others. Please raise up young men and women to fill all the opportunities we have for pastors, teachers, staff ministers, and missionaries across our church body. Thank you for the support of your people that helps remove obstacles from their path. Jesus, continue to grant that your gospel is shared across the earth. Amen.
