The global pandemic has impacted everyone around the world, with the greatest impact felt by marginalised communities. Misean Cara members have been quick to respond to ensure that no-one is left behind - by the pandemic or its associated lockdowns which have brought hunger and trauma to many communities. In this edition of our quarterly update on Misean Cara activities, we are focusing on Misean Cara members' response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At this time we also remember our members working in Lebanon and helping communities in Beirut to recover from the devastating blast that destroyed large parts of the city on 4 August.

From Thailand to Columbia, Lesotho to Nepal, Misean Cara is supporting its members to respond to the urgency of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The response to this pandemic is only as strong as the weakest link; we at Misean Cara stand together with our members in our commitment to help those in need in the Global South.
We are supporting members to help protect their communities: sewing masks, setting up hand-washing points, sourcing Personal Protective Equipment and distributing food parcels along with medication to those in need where possible.
Misean Cara is also focusing on those who are hardest to reach, supporting health care and humanitarian provision – this means targeting, for example, people living in refugees camps,as well as the elderly and people who have disabilities; those who are likely to be worst affected by the COVID-19 virus.

In the early days of the COVID-19 outbreak, the Marist Brothers in Aleppo, Syria, contacted Misean Cara to ask for help to ensure that elderly residents of the ruined city could be provided with meals. Read more about this Syrian version of Meals on Wheels which ensured that vulnerable people left behind in the city could get by.
The innovation of our members is a constant source of inspiration at Misean Cara. The story of inventiveness and creativity by the Ursuline Sisters in the Karen district of Nairobi illustrates the power of innovation to provide the community with access to water for hand-washing, while reducing the risk of contamination through shared taps. The COVID-19 pandemic is impacting lives and livelihoods across the globe, as well as affecting all aspects of development and humanitarian activities.
Misean Cara’s Livelihoods Officer Don Lucey reflects on how the pandemic has underlined the importance of a robust and resilient food system.
Misean Cara presented its annual report at our online AGM which was held this year on the 24th of June. The Report provides an overview of over 350 projects supported by Misean Cara, worth over €15.2 million last year. The report includes stories of impact by missionaries all over the globe, highlighting some Misean Cara member activities, along with an overview of Misean Cara spending, strategic priorities and progress.

This Learning Brief summarises the findings of a research project designed and led by Misean Cara in 2018 and 2019. It presents a 'transformative' approach to safeguarding and signposts the way for a strategic framework which engages with children as both rights-holders and stakeholders.
