Dear Oenophile,
The red wines of the Southern Rhone are usually a blend of Syrah and Grenache; add in a little Mourvedre and a splash of Cinsault, and you have the delectable Chateauneuf-du-pape. The star, however, of this medley is Grenache. This juicy and bold varietal thrives in the warm, temperate climate of Southern Rhone. All of its surroundings work together to help the fruit reach full maturity; the Rhone river to help balance out the cold weather in winter, rolling hillsides filled with diverse soils, and the famous round pebbles that absorb heat and warm the vines at night. The resulting wine offers notes of blackberry, plum, mocha, licorice, figs, and raspberries. Enjoy these bold yet fruit-forward red blends with your next grilled meat course!
