Dear Wildcat Families,
Thanks so much for all your support and communication. As the district announced yesterday, all students will learn remotely during the first quarter of the year. The exact parameters have yet to be announced, but I can tell you that instruction will include live, daily engagement with teachers. And with time to plan, we're excited to develop better structures and supports for students to succeed this fall.
This summer, our teacher-leaders have been working to identify the resources and methods that will make learning most effective in remote, hybrid, and in-person environments. We believe our key instructional priorities--engaging students in rigorous tasks, aligning curriculum to 4C's and STEM, providing multiple tiers of supports, and encouraging student voice and engagement in civic life--are more important in remote learning, not less. We've been working to acquire technology and tools that will support all our students in learning remotely, and develop better ways to get that technology into students' hands. And we are planning ways to engage all students (and particularly seniors) in planning for college and career, including SAT and AP testing.
The coming days and weeks have lots of uncertainty, and I know you have lots of questions. I wanted to ask you, first, to feel free to share those questions with me: they're useful in our planning, even and especially if I don't have answers. You can always email me at pjkarafiol@cps.edu. Second, we need to make sure we have 100% accurate information on how to contact our students and their families. Please fill out our updated online Emergency Contact Form, and please share it within the LV community, so that we can be sure we can reach every student and family. Third, even during the summer, our team is working to make sure all students are safe and healthy; if you have any urgent issues, you can call the school between 8:30am and 12:30 PM M-F to let us know that you need assistance, and we'll make sure an appropriate staff member follows up.
Thanks very much for all of your support. Our admin team can't wait until our Wildcat family gets to be together again, and I know our classroom teachers and other staff feel the same way. I will continue to communicate as the district's plans and ours develop. In the meantime, stay strong, and GO WILDCATS!
Sincerely,
Paul J. Karafiol, Ed.D.
