CFHL, UCCE Yolo County Adds Author Narration to Virtual Lesson
CalFresh Healthy Living (CFHL), UCCE Yolo County created engaging, age-appropriate virtual lessons for Esparto Elementary third grade students using the curriculum It’s My Choice…Eat Right! Be Active! A variety of learning strategies were used to reach as many students as possible. Monica Drazba, CFHL, UCCE Yolo County Nutrition Educator, invited the author of Alicia’s Fruity Drinks to narrate in Spanish and English the featured book in the curriculum’s final lesson.
- This summer, Nutrition Educator, Laura Quinones-Neri translated each video and added Spanish closed captioning for English Language Learners and their families.
- Each video segment incorporated cartoon clips, animations, webcam recordings, and PowerPoint slides. The final two videos include a physical activity break to facilitate student movement.
Overall, creating virtual lessons that are age-appropriate and accessible provides Yolo County students with the opportunity to continuously build their knowledge of healthy nutrition and lifestyles while at home.
“I did a special invitation to meet and do your lesson and listen to the book. Ten students and their parents came, which is very good! They loved the book….Thanks so much for this! I told the students that Mrs. Ruiz Flores recorded the reading especially for them.”
-Mrs. Pitner, 3rd grade teacher

UC Nutrition Education Programs Pivot to Meet California’s Needs During Pandemic
Source: UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
CalFresh Healthy Living, UC and its county UC Cooperative Extension (UCCE) offices work in schools and community settings to give low-income children and families the opportunities and resources they need to eat right, stay active and lead healthy lives.
As California’s unemployment rate rises due to COVID-19, their efforts have never been more important, nor more challenging, but how do you provide in-person services during a pandemic?
“We pivot,” said Kamaljeet Khaira, director of CalFresh Healthy Living, UC. “To meet the new remote learning needs of schools and communities, we shifted our nutrition, physical activity and garden-based education interventions to online platforms. We are transforming the delivery method of 19 different curricula.” Read more.
