Aoife Lee: managing challenging behaviours

It can be difficult enough to deal with children's challenging behaviours at the best of times but home life can be even more frustrating at times of crisis such as many of us have been experiencing recently - trying to home-school (often while also working remotely), keeping children busy when they can't meet friends, dealing with the sudden loss of employment and income etc. Aoife Lee of Parent Support has provided dlr Libraries with a series of short videos  which aim to increase our understanding of why children behave as they do, how to take control when behaviour becomes disruptive, how to set boundaries and how to build awareness of the triggers that affect childrens' behaviour.

We hope you find these videos helpful. You can follow Aoife on her social media channels linked here.

Babies Love Books

dlr Babies Love Books is a book gifting scheme brought to you by dlr Libraries. Every child born in the county of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown is entitled to collect a free book bag at their local library. The scheme encourages parents and children to read together from birth.

The Baby Bag contains either an English or Irish language book, an information leaflet about the scheme as well as tips and suggestions for reading to babies and young children. It also contains an invitation to join the library (for free) so that baby and family can enjoy many more colourful board books, picture books, cds, dvds, audio and e-books to suit all tastes, interests and age ranges.

It's never too early to start reading!

Books for breakfast

We’re delighted to share a new podcast about books and writing devised by poets and writers Enda Wyley and Peter Sirr - Books for Breakfast. It is on weekly, every Thursday – and it’s available on Spotify and all the usual podcast apps. So far, guests have included Christine Dwyer Hickey, Alice Lyons and Nick Kelly. Don’t miss their Toaster Challenge where they talk about a book they love for approx. 2 minutes, as long as it takes to make a slice of toast. With signature tune by Colm Mac Con Iomaire, what’s not to like!

The Charles Hamilton Oswald photographic collection

dlr Libraries' Archivist in Residence, David Gunning has begun processing the Charles Hamilton Oswald Collection, which is made up of nearly 150 photographic plates donated to dlr Libraries in 2018. The photographs were collected by C.H. Oswald, a resident of Dún Laoghaire, and date from c. 1860 to the end of the nineteenth century. The images largely depict vessels at sea or in Dún Laoghaire Harbour but some feature buildings and residents of the town as well. The glass plates will be catalogued, preserved and digitised over the coming months.
