Business Manager’s Report

Hello Brothers and Sisters,

As I write, there are 86 on Inside Book I, and 6 on Book II. The work picture has held steady, and the near future looks pretty good. See the Dispatcher’s report later in this Watts for details.

I know we have all missed our monthly meetings and being able to spend time with our Union family, but it has just never seemed safe, which is especially true recently with the large daily numbers of new cases. We are certainly not alone in the 7th District. Many Locals, like 1141, have not held a regular monthly meeting since March, including Dallas, Wichita, Austin, and Houston. Smaller Locals were more likely to have had at least one in person meeting – Tucson and Waco held June meetings. Your staff and Executive Board have been closely tracking our community and Local numbers, and we have chosen to err on the side of caution up to this point. We will hold in-person monthly union meetings as soon, and as safely, as possible.

We have seen an increase in positive Covid-19 tests on our worksites over the last month, and it’s not a trend we want to overlook. I know we are all tired of dealing with this, but please continue to utilize the procedures, tools and supplies provided to keep you and your family safe. Please let us know if you feel there is a safety issue on your jobsite, or contact us for any reason through any of the following means: email office.ibew1141@gmail.com with any general questions or issues; email dispatch.ibew1141@gmail.com for anything regarding dispatch; call the Nightline at 405-670-2243 after office hours for current job requests; or call 405-670-4777 during office hours. Our website at ibew1141.org has a great deal of current information, with coronavirus updates at the top in Red.

As always, I look forward to hearing from you at your convenience.

Fraternally,
Dewayne Wilcox
Business Manager/Financial Secretary

Meeting Cancelation

The regular Union meeting scheduled for 7 pm, Friday, August 7, 2020, is canceled. This decision is made out of concern for the health of our members, officers, staff and our families. Thank you for your understanding.

Future meetings remain as scheduled, but may also be canceled depending upon the situation.

Training Directors Report for August, 2020

Good day Brothers and Sisters,

We are currently working all available apprentices, and as of this writing, all CW/CEs who want to work can go to work. Work has remained steady with calls coming in on a regular basis. If you are out of work, be sure to contact the JATC at (405) 672-7600 to ensure we know. You can also sign the available for work list online.

We are now taking all applications online, so if you talk to someone about our apprenticeship please tell them to go to our website at www.woejatc.org. They can fill out both apprentice and CW/CE applications online under their respective tabs.

We have more NEC Code Update classes scheduled and approved for August, September and October, if needed. Please contact the JATC to sign up.

QC classes are still on hold, so if you need a QC class, we still have online courses available. We will schedule some QC classes as soon as things subside. The LMCC has extended the expiration of the QC date to October 31st because of the current situation.

The current schedule of mixing Zoom classes with face-to-face classes for our apprentices is going as smoothly as possible. I know the students and the instructors will be glad to resume all classes face-to-face when we can do it in a safe manner.

Please bear with us as we try to get caught up on Journeyman evaluations.  We really appreciate your prompt response to our text and email requests for evaluations on our apprentices so that we can address any areas in which they may be deficient. You can submit a Journeyman evaluation on any apprentice, CW or CE by calling our office and requesting a link – you don’t have to wait until one is requested from you. Good or bad – we want to hear from you and appreciate your input!

The JATC is adjusting as the situation changes. Thank you for your patience and, as always, we thank you for your support.

Organizing Report

Your Organizing Department has been keeping busy. We have met with four contractors, and we are close to signing one. We have three targeted potential contractors, Genesis, Ross and Skyline that we are focusing on. We met with a total of 24 potential unlimited Journeymen, 4 Residential Journeymen, 29 Apprentices and one Teledata. We had nine visits to potential contractors, and 58 home visits for workers.

We have brought in 28 new members recently: 6 JW, 2 Residential JW, 8 CE, 10 CW and 2 Teledata.

We are working on a new small commercial agreement, printed 1,200 fliers for jobsite visits, and we have been working with our VOC to help members affected by the pandemic. Stay safe.

Updates from Dispatch

Just a note from Dispatch, since we are not able to meet!

We have had several contractors say they are expecting to put in large numbers of calls. By all accounts, the near future looks promising, with work inside and outside of the metro, a lot of hospital work, large and small office remodels, small manufacturing, and an event/activity center.

We have filled approximately 85 JW calls since April 1, 2020.

There are 86 on Inside Book I, 6 on Inside Book II, 3 on Teledata Book I, and none on Residential.
Looking forward to getting back to normal, whatever normal is!

Local 1141 Dispatcher

Traveling Card

Journeyman Inside Wireman Chase M. Baldwin, a member of Local Union 441 in Santa Ana, California, wishes to deposit his Traveling Card into Local Union 1141.

Any member who wishes to speak on behalf of Brother Baldwin should send their statement to office.ibew1141@gmail.com; mail to Executive Board, PO Box 95789, Oklahoma City, OK 73154; or drop off their statement at the Hall no later than Monday, August 17, 2020 to make sure we receive your statement before the Executive Board meeting on Wednesday, August 19th.

From Laura: Make Payments the Easy Way

We have enhanced our credit card processing to enable more convenient dues and death benefit payment options. A brief explanation is that it involves "tokenization," which is a secure way to store credit or debit card information off-site at the bank.

If you would like to sign up for this feature, we ask you to text the office at 844-337-5808 with “I, [your name], give IBEW permission to store my credit card information." PLEASE DO NOT text your credit card information to the Local 1141 Office. Laura will get this information verbally from you when she calls.

If you choose this new feature, the last Wednesday of every month, you will receive a text letting you know how much your dues and death benefit payment will be for the following month. WE WILL NOT CHARGE YOUR CARD until you reply “YES” to the text. If you want to pay additional months/death benefits, you would reply “YES” with the number of months and death benefits you wish to pay. You will receive your credit card receipt via email within 48 hours and your dues receipt will be mailed to your home address.

We are happy to report that over 430 members, a little over 30% of our membership, are currently signed up for this feature, and it has been working great! So if it is something you have been considering, now is a good time to make your life a little easier.

Health and Benefit Contribution Rate Update

If you are a Journeyman working in our jurisdiction, you may have noticed that your hourly pay decreased by $.05 per hour starting with your Thursday, July 9th check. This is because our Southwestern Health and Benefit contribution rate increased from $5.60 to $5.80 per hour worked effective June 29th.

This $.05 reduction will also impact all wage rates that are based on the JW rate. For example, if you are a First Period Apprentice 1B, earning 50% of the JW rate, your hourly rate will decrease by $.025. Teledata classifications are unaffected by this change.

If you are a JW and not currently Quality Connected, now is a great time to do what you need to do to become eligible. If you do not know what is required, please send an email to office.ibew1141@gmail.com and we will assist you.

Keep your QC Current!

The deadline to take a class to maintain Quality Connection (QC) eligibility has been extended to October 31st, 2020. Please go to the JATC website at etawok.org or call 405.672.7600 to find out about available classes.

There are many online classes available to help keep you safe while you keep your QC eligibility. Don't forget, do it today.

Make Sure Your Benefits Come Back to You

You may receive an email from an ibew.org address regarding your benefit home fund designation(s). We are updating our member records on the ERTS (Electronic Reciprocal Transfer System) so that if you need to work in another jurisdiction, your benefits will be processed correctly.

If you received an ERTS benefit email and you are already working in another jurisdiction, or have in the past, please send an email to office.ibew1141@gmail.com as soon as possible so that we can try to verify that any benefits you have already earned have been reciprocated correctly.

FFCRA Update

If you are unable to work because you have tested positive for Covid-19, or someone on your jobsite has tested positive causing it to be shut down and preventing you from working, it is important that you do not file for unemployment immediately, but instead contact your Employer first.

Under the FFCRA, employers with fewer than 500 employees may be required to pay employees up to 80 hours while they are unable to work.

Please also try to stay in touch with your employer at least weekly.

IBEW 1141 President’s Report

Hello once again, Brothers and Sisters.  As always, I hope that you are healthy and working as much as you want to.

Last time, I spoke about the 100th Anniversary Committee, and I am pleased to announce that the Committee is up and running well.  They have met 4 times (maybe 5 by this printing), many ideas have been discussed, and funds have been procured at the recommendation of the E-Board.

But again, what is needed most is your input.  What would you like to see to celebrate our 100th?  We have received several ideas, which are greatly appreciated, but we need more.  The last thing I want to hear is “Why didn’t you guys do…..whatever.” or “Why didn’t you guys do this?” This celebration is about you! Here’s your opportunity.

Please send any ideas, questions, & comments to the Co-Chairmen, Marty Crain and Bill Servati at birthday1141@gmail.com

Thank you, Brothers and Sisters for all that you do.
