In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Greetings of Peace!

I hope you had a beautiful and blessed Eid al-Adha!

It may seem like it was much longer ago than 20 weeks that Governor Gavin Newsom banned gatherings of more than 250 people to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 on March 12.

With the blessings of God and the support of our community, we are honored to say that our Center was able to quickly switch gears to offer programming remotely in response to the unprecedented circumstances. On March 13, we offered our first fully virtual Jumma prayer. We went on to pivot our entire Center to operate as a virtual mosque within 1 week, avoiding any disruptions to our religious programming, Sunday school, MYG, JYG, and beyond.

We created a resource page with social, financial, and mental health services offered by our Center and local contacts in light of the pandemic. Our food pantry increased its distribution, providing food to over 1200 people/month. We hosted our first-ever virtual Ramadan, streaming over 100 hours of spiritual programming in the form of talks, children's Quranic recitation, Taraweeh, Qiyams, and more. We are blessed to say that we provided iftar grocery boxes to over 200 families, and hosted Virtual Eid prayer with over 700 families, an Eid social, and an Eid toy drive for some of the children of our community.

Besides bringing the Center to your home, we are working behind the scenes to respond to the issue of racial justice. Our Board, staff, committee heads, New Horizon leaders, and affiliated organizations' leaders have been invited to participate in a racial justice training from Muslim ARC (Anti-Racist Coalition). Hedab Tarifi joined our team as an official social justice spokesperson for this year alongside our current spokesperson, Omar Ricci. Imam Tariq Aquil will serve as an official Board advisor on matters of race and inclusion. Looking forward, we are exploring a Twin Mosque project established by the Shura Council to foster and strengthen bonds between communities of various racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

We have worked around the clock to meet the moment and bring the Center to your home. May God bless this beautiful community and let us work together to forward His cause.

Peace and blessings,

Dr. Lena AlSarraf

Virtual Eid al-Adha Prayer & Social

We are blessed to report that over 600 families joined us for our Eid prayer with Dr. Saleh Kholaki. We also hosted a social immediately after, exchanges warm wishes and Eid greetings virtually in lieu of our usual handshakes and hugs.

Expressions of Unity Forum

On the auspicious occasion of Eid, in collaboration with MPAC, Shia Muslim Council, ICNA, and Shura Council, presented the Expression of Unity Forum on August 1st. The aim was to foster awareness of the diversity within the Muslim Community and the external challenges to it, address the hollow tolerance among Muslims, and to collectively propose practical steps to finding ways forward.
