…“You must love the Lord your God
with all your heart, with all your being,
and with all your mind.
This is the first and greatest commandment.
And the second is like it:
You must love your neighbor as you love yourself.
~Matthew 22:37-39, CEB

Senator John Lewis has been on my mind this for the past few weeks. The late senator had a great number of positive role models in his youth and young adult life including Martin Luther King Jr. John Lewis said, “Rosa Parks inspired me to find a way to get in the way, to get in trouble…good trouble, necessary trouble."
If Jesus and John Lewis had been alive at the same time I think they might have been good friends. Jesus knew what it meant to get in trouble…good trouble. Jesus put people first, healing on the Sabbath and standing up for what he believed was right…even when it got him into trouble with those in positions of power. He argued against legalities that did not put people first.
During his life John Lewis spoke out against things that degraded others, like segregation, and stood up for equality, believing in the goodness of the human race. Jesus reminded us ,“You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your being, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: You must love your neighbor as you love yourself. (Matthew 22:37-39, CEB)
COVID-19 has brought us a world pandemic, changing the way we live. An emphasis during this time has been the effect on people’s lives – how they are going to make living, get healthcare, and pay the bills. At this time in history there is a greater focus on the well-being of people than there has been in a long time.
Where is God moving your heart? Are you called to get into “good trouble” like Jesus or John Lewis as you participate in acts of advocacy and solidarity that put the well-being of people living in poverty or illness first? One of the latest news clips reminds us that after months of being out of work, many people are about to be evicted. Perhaps you are being called to walk beside these folks in some way. Maybe God has placed a call on your heart that I haven’t even imagined.
John Lewis said, “What I try to tell young people is that if you come together with a mission, and it’s grounded with love and a sense of community, you can make the impossible possible.” The Bible tells us that through Christ all things are possible.
May it be so.
With Love,
Donna
