Hi <<First Name>>,

Northern hemisphere university groups are planning the start of a new academic year, so this newsletter focuses on ways to present EA to newcomers, including an updated Clubs Fair guide and resources to run introductory talks and workshops. We also feature a community spotlight from Stanford EA.

All the best,

Katie, Harri, and Catherine (Groups team, CEA)

Get Involved
  • The CEA Events Team will be coordinating two more virtual events before the end of 2020; a student event and EAGxAsia-Pacific. They’d love to hear from any group organizers who’d like to be involved in helping with either event. Sign up here for more information.

  • Luke Freeman has been appointed as the new head of Giving What We Can. Luke has been an integral part of the Australian EA community, including directing multiple EAGx Australia conferences and community retreats. Luke will be working with group organisers to compile resources on promoting EA to group members. If you would like to contribute, please get in touch with Catherine at catherine@centreforeffectivealtruism.org.

  • EA University of Chicago is hosting a forecasting tournament from October to January for EA groups at colleges/universities around the world. They are looking for groups to participate, and people to help organise. If you are unable to rustle up a team, a team will be arranged for you. This scoping document describes the event in greater detail. Register a team by August 15 by filling out this Google form. If you have any questions or want to help out, reach out to Diego at pedullasmith@gmail.com.

  • Jessica from Yale EA would like to learn about other groups’ plans for managing a virtual semester and to pool resources with other groups. Join the discussion on the EA Groups Slack (join the slack here).

  • Marka from Harvard EA is encouraging group organisers running introductory fellowships—especially those using the Arete materials—to collaborate and support each other. Join the #fellowships channel on the EA Groups Slack to get involved (join the slack here).

  • An EA Focusmate group has formed, providing one-on-one video calls with others in the community to help to stay focused with your work or study.

  • The Global Research and Consulting Group at Harvard is starting a High Impact Accelerator program to help non-profits become more effective and they are looking for more university EA groups to get involved.

  • Lukas from Vanderbilt EA has sparked a discussion about whether EA groups should support political causes. Join the discussion on the EA Groups Slack (join the slack here).

  • Finally, please help us improve this newsletter by filling in our feedback form

Clubs Fairs and Introductions to EA

A Clubs Fair, also called Freshers Fair, Activities Fair, or Orientation, is a key way for university groups to recruit new members, especially first-year students.  The EA Resource Hub has an updated guide to running a table at a Clubs Fair, including a new guide to running Lightning Giving Games, where participants choose which of 2-4 charities gets to receive money. The guide was based on the experience of several groups running in-person events, but aspects of it will still be relevant for those running virtual Clubs Fairs.

Several new introductory EA talks have been added to the EA Resource Hub, including talks from Eric Gastfriend, Stanford EA, and EA New Zealand.

Whether you are talking about EA to a large group or just one-on-one, this guide to communicating about EA outlines several approaches to introducing EA and highlights some potential pitfalls to avoid.

Group Updates
  • The UK groups are coordinating and exchanging tips for next term. They are planning live-streamed speaker events for all UK university groups to attend.
  • EA Estonia has held two retreats this summer. Their Summer Days retreat, held in a cottage in the countryside surrounded by trees, consisted of talks, workshops, and relaxing in the sauna. Their strategy development retreat allowed the key organisers to discuss the community's vision and comparative advantage, and to define a role structure.
  • EA Singapore recently hosted a Fireside chat with Varsha Venugopal from Suvita to learn about the process of starting a charity — from researching an idea through to monitoring and evaluation. This semester, they will be starting an Introductory Fellowship for university students across Asia.
  • EA University of Melbourne is keeping its members connected through lockdown with quick 7 am “wake-up” Zoom calls and regular online games nights.

Stanford EA

“Our two primary goals are

  1. developing students with well-thought-out cause prioritization and high-impact career plans reflecting this,
