Welcome

"Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our Help and our Shield. For our heart is glad in God because we trust in His Holy Name. Let your steadfast love, O God be upon us, as we place our trust in you....."

~ Psalm 33:20-22

"Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all."

~ Ephesians 4:2-5

We are well in the middle of the sixth month of this pandemic. As I was reading the verse from the psalm above, I am reminded that patience is not one of my strengths. I am quick to be impatient at home and in all other areas of my life.  It is hard to wait in line, it is hard to wait - period.

It is so hard not to be in control.

Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our Help and our Shield. King David reminds us that God is there - always there to help us and protect us in our times of trouble.  From our worry of this virus, to when and how we will resume worship services, to loss of work, depression, anxiety, frustration and anger... God wants to give us peace.

Are we willing to let go and move God to the center as we wait? Being patient as we wait on God is putting our faith in to practice. We are not waiting doing nothing, we are waiting on God and relying on Him alone. This is the peace God can give us during this time.

The apostle Paul reminds us in Ephesians 4 to strive to be unified and love each other. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

This time of waiting is a time of testing - where God is calling us to put our faith in to practice.  What will get us through this challenging is:

  1. Our faith and reliance on God.
  2. Our love and encouragement for each other.

No one loves what is happening in the world right now. Nothing about what we are going through as a church is ideal. It is a difficult time.

I am confident though, if we are committed to moving Christ to the center of our lives and follow God's lead as we move forward - God will bless us and we will be stronger in our faith as a result.

I am confident that if we are committed to loving each other - really loving and encouraging each other we will be stronger as a church as a result. We must be committed to being unified with each other as we fix our eyes on Jesus. God will bless us as a church, and we will be stronger in our faith journeys as a result of our faithfulness and deep love for God and each other.  Amen.

New Sermon Series
Come to the Table
September 13 - October 4

September 13
"Revelation @ the Table"
Luke 24:28-35

When Jesus breaks bread with the disciples, their eyes are opened, and they recognize him. Communion opens our eyes to see God and others more clearly. At the table, we come to know one another and God.

September 20
"Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner!"
Luke 14:12-14

Most would agree to share meals with individuals who are familiar to them or with those they know the best. Yet, Christ contends that the table is less about familiarity and more about hospitality and care.

September 27
"Enemies @ the Table"
Psalm 23

When you feel that people or situations are against you, God is still in control and can provide a blessing.

October 4
"Laughter @ the Table"
Genesis 18:1-15

God invites us to pay attention for God’s unexpected ways of working in our lives in moments of tears and moments of laughter.

DeBows will continue to present weekly worship services online. You can attend online worship at debows.online.church. The standard worship service time will remain the same: Sunday morning at 9:30 AM. You will have the ability to replay the worship service after the first 9:30 AM presentation.

Outdoor Worship Service
Sunday Morning - 9 AM
DeBows is currently conducting outdoor worship services on Sunday mornings at 9:00 AM. At this time, we envision continuing outdoor worship services throughout the summer, weather permitting.  During this time, plans are being developed in preparation for Phase 2 of the church reopening process; indoor gathering.

Here is some information about the outdoor worship services:

  • Worship will begin promptly at 9:00am and should last no more than 30 minutes. Please arrive a little early to get yourselves situated.
  • When outside your car, please maintain social distancing; at least 6 feet apart from anyone you are not living with. Knowing this is not always possible, wearing masks is recommended the entire time you are outside of your car.
  • The church building and bathrooms are closed, except for emergencies.
  • If you prefer to stay in your car, you may listen to the service on your car radio by tuning to 89.9 FM.
  • You may bring your own lawn chairs and an umbrella for shade.
  • We will not meet on days with inclement weather. If it is questionable, please check the church website (www.debowsumc.org). We will post any closings by 8am on Sunday. We will also send out an email blast to notify you of service cancellations.
  • Gloves are not required; please only touch your own stuff.
  • We recommend anyone with any health issues to continuing watching the online worship service.
  • If you have been traveling out of state, we ask that you follow NJ state guidelines.
  • We ask that you clean up your own personal space after worship.
  • Online worship services will continue to be offered in conjunction with the outdoor services.

We are thankful for your faithful support during these times of isolation and uncertainty. Your generous giving has been vital in maintaining our ability to cover expenses and continue our church ministries. You may continue your giving by sending your offering check directly to the church or by using the church online giving feature found in the footer of the church website. It is easy, secure, and appreciated. The Online Giving option is also available while you are watching the weekly online worship service. --- Thank You

In Our Prayers

--- Week of 8/16 ---

Guy Raymond's brother-in-law, who Guy loves like a brother. He just lost his daughter to a senseless murder. Not many details at this time, just that she was at a fast food restaurant in North Carolina. Please lift up Jim Baker, his wife Laura, and their younger daughter during this very difficult time.

First Responders & Healthcare Workers - Prayers and praises for all those that serve and work in close proximity to people who have or potentially have the coronavirus.

--- Week of 8/9 --

Lauren Rikard (Daughter of Guy & Christine) - she had surgery on August 12 to remove a tumor, which was larger than first thought. She is in Alabama, so Guy & Christine were unable to be there. Please lift up Lauren and the family in prayer. UPDATE - surgery was successful and tumor was found to be benign.

--- Week of 8/2 ---

Erica Williams (Pastor Ernie's wife) - She came home last week after spending several days in the hospital to bring Afib under control. She is doing relatively well, and her body is adjusting to the prescribed medication. Pastor Ernie would like to convey his thanks for all of your prayers.

--- Week of 7/26 ---

Eileen Schuck (Ervin friend) - for her bladder cancer.

--- Continued prayer for home-bound church members ---

Rudy Iannacone; Ann Giarratano; Paul Bartek; Cheryl Barrentine; Donna Ridge

*** Please help us keep this prayer list up-to-date.  To add or remove names from this list, please contact Pastor Denise at pastor@debowsumc.org.  All prayer requests go directly to the pastor.

Time of Reflection
“Be still and know that I am God”
~ Psalm 46:10 ~

On the church website, there is a page called "Time of Reflection". It can be found under the "Worship" menu. On this page are words of comfort and encouragement, including links to Pastor Denise's weekly devotions, as well as messages submitted by other members of our church family. If you would like to submit something for this page, please send what you would like to share to Pastor Denise at pastor@debowsumc.org.

Also, please remember to continue to submit your prayer requests to Pastor Denise.  These requests will be shared with the church as instructed.
Happy Trails!

A message from
Chris & Linda Van Arsdale

Hi Pastor Denise. I hope you enjoyed your down time with the family. I wanted to let you and the entire congregation know that Chris and I decided to sell our house this spring in advance of future economic uncertainty and it unfolded very quickly. We unfortunately missed the two 'live' services right before our departure because it was so hectic. We were still working, selling off  40 years of accumulation of Chris's construction equipment and packing simultaneously. We have now 'partially' settled in our new, but incomplete house that has been in the works for the past seven years in the Finger Lakes Region of upstate New York. We followed lifetime friends from Emely's Hill UMC up here after their retirement because we fell in love with the natural beauty of the area.

The time we spent at DeBows was an enriching experience and we made many friends. It is unquestionable that being in the company of like-minded Christians has guided us in the direction we were meant to follow. Personally; I truly enjoyed my time as a Trustee and the collaboration I had with the other Trustees as well as working in the Food Pantry. We will miss all of our church family members. We plan on joining a church here as soon as the pandemic restrictions lift. When we are back in the area, we will join in a service with you!

May God continue to bless the DeBows Family,

~ Chris and Linda Van Arsdale

Our music program is led by our Minister of Music, Grayce Armstrong. Over the last 5 months she has been collaborating remotely with several of our musicians and singers to provide music for our online worship. Their creativity has been inspiring and much appreciated. "Thank You" to all who have contributed their musical talents during this time.

Recordings may be submitted for inclusion in online worship. You may contact Grayce by email at music@debowsumc.org if you are interested in recording for virtual choir and band.

2nd & 4th
Monday Each Month

The next Food Pantry distribution is
Monday, August 24
The DeBows Food Pantry is open on the 2nd & 4th Monday each month. Due to the COVID-19 situation, a new distribution process has been implemented so we can maintain this important ministry. Food will be distributed using an "Appointment Only" system.

People can call the church number at 732-928-4475 to make an appointment.

Please note: participants need to call the church by 5:00 PM on the Saturday prior to the scheduled food pantry day. This gives the Food Pantry volunteers time to prepare the food for distribution. "Thank You" for your cooperation.

Please contact Deb Cregle if you need further information.
Upcoming Fundraisers
DeBows will be conducting a Rada Cutlery fundraiser during the month of September. All orders will be due by Sunday, September 27. Brochures will be available soon. Information about online ordering will be available in the September 2 newsletter. The church will realize 40% of the sales. Contact Anita for more information at anitachichester@gmail.com.
DeBows will be placing a bulk Scrip gift card order on November 15. This will be the only gift card order before Christmas. A list of the available vendors will be in the October 28 newsletter. Contact Sue for more information at jerseysue@outlook.com.
[PROPOSED]
Fall Flea Market

DeBows is considering hosting a flea market on Saturday, October 3. This would be an "outside only" event and no food would be served. A certain amount of volunteers and vendors would be needed to make the event viable.

Volunteers would be needed for early morning setup, manning the church flea market tables, and post event breakdown. To make a decision to hold the event and allow time for advertising, we would need feedback concerning volunteers and vendors no later than Wednesday, August 27. Please contact Sue at jerseysue@outlook.com if you would like to be a volunteer or vendor.
