August 2020 Sport England local delivery pilot update
In light of the newest restrictions brought in by the government last Friday, 31st July, we want to let you know what we're doing at JU:MP in respect of the three main priorities we set at the beginning of April to:
  • Support our children to be active - read more about the projects and activities we have started most recently below.
  • Support our providers - our community engagement managers are working closely with the providers we work with to deliver COVID-secure activities over the summer, providing risk assessment guidance and support with communications.
  • Keep our team healthy and ensure they are able to offer a service to partners - the team are working between home and the office and will be taking breaks at different times over the summer. If you can't get to one of us on the phone, please email or try someone else - all of our contact details are on the Active Bradford website.

Love Exploring

This week we have begun to let people know about dinosaurs and fairies in both Lister park and Peel park! Working with local groups such as Friends of Peel Park, Lister Community Action Group, Abilities, Community Works and Bradford Council's Parks team, Love Exploring have introduced an augmented reality app to families in the area, giving the opportunity for people to learn more about the park whilst hunting for dinosaurs and fairies!

Due to the positioning of the dinosaurs and fairies, it encourages people to visit lesser trodden parts of the park, allowing for more distance between families and lots of walking.

We would love to see photos of you with the creatures! Tag us on Facebook or Twitter @JoinUsMovePlay and use #DinoSafari.

You can download the app on either the
Google Play Store or Apple Store.

Chalk Walks

You may start to notice temporary chalk markings appearing on the pavements around Lister park, Lower Grange and Peel park. With the help of the Adventure Activities team at Bradford Council, journeys have been mapped with simple chalk markings on the ground to encourage different types of movement at various points, such as jumping, balancing and hopping.

The route also includes letters for families to find a hidden word clue or to count the number of dinosaur footprints, which they can send to us in order to be placed in a prize draw. The aim is to encourage families to independently discover their local greenspace, and walk and play together.

Summer activities

Over the last few weeks we have been working with providers to restart activities for families in the JU:MP area to be active in safe, COVID-secure environments. We are delighted to be able to run these activities again secure in the knowledge that appropriate guidance is being followed, making sure our families are kept as safe as they can be whilst having fun moving and playing outside.

Details of the activities are shared with local families through the providers themselves and will soon be available to see on the Join Us: Move. Play website, www.joinusmoveplay.org. While providers learn what is working for them, and to make sure the number of attendees are kept within guidance, booking systems will be in place.

If you live or work in the JU:MP area please let families you know that they can leave their details on the website for us to be able to keep them informed with what's happening locally - www.joinusmoveplay.org/join-us

“...We think your initiative is amazing and has really helped keep the whole family occupied (in the most fun way) during lockdown.”

“...My daughter had a blast and was always excited for the new activity the next day...I think we’ll keep on doing an activity a day for a while.”

“Brilliant idea. Some of the ideas remind me of when I was younger.”

JU:MP@Home has received amazing feedback from parents and groups who have distributed activity calendars to vulnerable families! More than 53,000 printed calendars were sent to homes of people living in the JU:MP area as well as to vulnerable families across the district.

Thanks to Living Well, we now have more available for groups to share!

If you would like to request a number of calendars to send to families, please get in touch and we will arrange this for you. You don't need to be operating in the JU:MP area, as long as you're in the Bradford district.

Don't forget you can also access the games online at www.jumpathome.org - there are now more than 40 activities to help keep young ones entertained and active while at home!

JUMP Award programme

The JU:MP Award Programme offers funding to constituted organisations that run fun, active projects for children across the JU:MP area of North Bradford.

Projects are to be delivered between October and December 2020, with grants from £250 up to £1,500, depending on the project.

Children say that they want fun, informal activities near to where they live and these are the types of physical activities that we are funding: play, dance, sports, martial arts, games, walking, cycling and exploring the outdoors.

We are particularly keen to receive applications for people who can deliver activities in Eccleshill, Heaton, Windhill, Manningham and Bolton.

If you have a great idea to get children and young people active, we want to hear from you!

Closing date: 4pm on 24th August

Research

As you will know, research underpins all the work we do with JU:MP. It is vitally important for us to be able to demonstrate the effectiveness of everything that we do and learn what else we could do to support our children in the JU:MP area to be more active.

We are currently recruiting research participants to look at barriers and facilitators to being active within the home environment. We would also like to speak with families who have used JU:MP@Home.

If you are responsible for any child aged under 15 years, please help us by completing this short survey - we'd also love to hear from children, so please can you ask if they would be happy to help too?

https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/JUMP_At_Home_Parents_Guardians

Survey for children:

The more people that we can talk to, the more we can tell whether JU:MP@Home has succeeded in keeping our children moving at home during lockdown. We can also start to look at what else we can do for children to be active at home.

Park audits

The JU:MP research team are conducting audits before, during and after the programme, which will allow us to see if there is any change in the footfall and how the parks and greenspaces are used. Two validated audit tools are used: System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities (SOPARC) and Natural Environment Scoring Tool (NEST). An audit of Peel Park was completed in June last year and has just taken place again this year to look at what has changed.

West Yorkshire Police - Partnership Intelligence Portal

We know from conversations that safety and crime is often a barrier for families accessing physical activity.

The Partnership Intelligence Portal has been developed by the police to give groups and organisations across the district a way to submit intelligence to the heart of West Yorkshire Police through a web-based system.

The portal is a way to bring partners together to share intelligence around local issues for the District. If you feel your group or organisation can contribute to the greater intelligence picture of Bradford, contact Charlotte Sugden, Intelligence Development Officer at West Yorkshire Police at charlotte.sugden@westyorkshire.police.uk who will be happy to provide further information.

50 Things To Do Before You’re Five is an app and website full of ideas of low cost/ no cost activities for very young children, linked to language development, creativity, literacy and health and well being.

Visit Bradford Council's dedicated COVID-19 section of the website for support and advice.

Leave your details on the website to receive updates directly to your inbox.
A big, JU:MP welcome to all new supporters of the programme!

An even bigger thank you to all who have come together to share information, run activities, influence policies and plans, co-ordinate people and work, and everything in-between!

We are all passionate about inspiring children to move and play every day and are committed to making this easier for families to do.

It's as difficult a time as ever, but together, we can help to make sure this happens.

Best wishes,

Join Us: Move. Play
