Hi API folks,

We've published a ton since our last digest, so hoping this gets us back on track! First off, we had a great discussion with Kin Lane and Alianna Inzana at last week's webinar Consumer-Centric API Governance. It's now live on YouTube. Read the blog summary here

In this digest, we welcome Sabrina Macpherson to the blog for the first time to share her API product management expertise. Discover her dual roadmap approach to API strategy.

Also, read our coverage of OpenAI, how The Met museum is using APIs, common API management mistakes, avoiding baking in the service layer, marketing to jaded developers, cell-based architecture, and different API governance models.

Thanks for reading!

How To Build And Enforce Great API Governance

In the wide world of web APIs, the need for governance and shared standards increases as a business seriously considers its data value and platform strategy. But, assembling the right governance approach is quite a balancing act of priorities. Thankfully, best practices have emerged. With OpenAPI Specification and the surrounding tooling ecosystem, API providers are well-positioned to build a governance approach that works. In our LiveCast, Consumer-Centric API Governance, we brought in experts Alianna Inzana, Smartbear, and Kin Lane, Postman, to discuss how to build and enforce fair platform-wide API policies that accelerate business objectives...

Product Strategy for APIs: A Roadmap Approach

By Sabrina Macpherson

roduct Strategy for APIs: A Roadmap Approach

When I first started working in product, I was a junior Product Development Manager (PDM) working on a public-facing website... It took me a while to figure out how to make it practical in the world of APIs. Because the product wasn’t as tangible as a website or an app, it wasn’t immediately clear how my users were different and that I needed to adjust my approach. My solution feels instinctual to me now, but I struggled to adapt to this when I first started. So, here are some of my thoughts on how to tackle product strategy when you’re the product manager of an API.

On GPT-3, OpenAI, and APIs

A new beta release from OpenAI has thrown the API world into a speculative frenzy of the potential and implications of AI and APIs. Both APIs and AI have been around for a while. They might not be as headline-grabbing as they once were, but with the arrival of GPT–3, that looks as if it’s about to change. AI working in conjunction with APIs, are a powerful combination. Together, we may be standing on the brink of the augmented future we’ve been waiting for.

How Museums Are Using APIs to Inspire Art Lovers Worldwide

In recent years, many art museums have turned to APIs to unlock the secrets of their archives. I recently met with Maria Kessler, Senior Program Manager of Digital Partnerships at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, to discuss its Met Collection API and overall digital strategy. By opening up with APIs, the museum can inspire new ways of accessing its collection, “connecting people to art in different ways, and connecting people to creativity, knowledge, and ideas,” says Kessler.

How to Avoid Baking the Service Layer Into Your API

By Himadri Das

How to Avoid Baking the Service Layer Into Your API

Programmers have been writing APIs since the ancient world of EJB, Messaging, and SOAP, and now REST. The main benefits of modern web APIs arise from decoupling the backend from the client service. So, how do we design quality APIs that achieve this goal? In this article, we’ll consider methods that help you bake great interfaces independent of the service layer.

Marketing to Jaded Developers: 101

By Thomas Bush

Marketing to Jaded Developers: 101

Let’s face it: there are plenty of developers who don’t care about you or your API product. They simply want a quick integration to build what they need and when they need it. No marketing spiel will change that. We’ll call them jaded developers. In this article, we’ll look at how you can still market to folks that honestly could care less. You can do this through a combination of discovery (making your API easy to find), language (speaking the right language to potential users), and self-service tools to enable quick onboarding and easy ongoing maintenance.
