Alumni Spotlight Introducing...
Kai Mai

Kai Mai ’01 is the former Co-President of Berkeley Chinese Alumni International Association – Shanghai Chapter and has co-organized numerous alumni events including mixers, conferences, and forums. He majored in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science at Cal and earned a master’s degree in Software Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Based in the Bay Area, he advises early-stage startups and consults for China entry strategy, planning, and execution.

What are some current projects you are working on?
I just bootstrapped the Cal Startup network, an entrepreneur's startup network. Our mission is to have Cal alumni and students connect, collaborate, and build successful next-generation startups to make positive changes across the globe without borders. We will host virtual events to have Cal alumni sharing their entrepreneurship stories and connect.

In this unprecedented uncertain time, I call on our Cal alumni friends to connect and support each other to become stronger than ever.

What was your undergraduate life like at Cal?
I was a transfer student from City College of San Francisco. Coming to Berkeley was a huge shock since everyone seemed to be smarter than me. I spent a lot of time in between Soda and Cory Halls and pulled a few all nighters doing projects. Looking back, I wish I had engaged with other forms of campus life more.

How do you tap into your Cal Alumni Network?
A few years ago, I recruited key influential alumni to set up The China Leadership Award Scholarship endowment. Through promoting this scholarship and the annual UC Berkeley Big Give campaign, I meet many Cal alumni and expand my network through volunteering to organize events and build communities. In my experience, Cal alumni have been very scrappy and are good at starting grassroot efforts.
