UPDATES FROM
THE TRAINING HUB
Dear Practice Managers,

Health Education England (HEE) South School of Pharmacy are delighted to announce funding to support the training of pre-registration trainee pharmacy technicians (PTPTs) in general practice from February 2021.

HEE want to work with employers to support the training of up to 30 pharmacy technician apprentices across the South region (South West, Thames Valley and Wessex) with GP ideally as the host employer. This will enable a new pharmacy technician workforce with primary care experience.

Please find attached further information and links to join a Q&A webinar on the 10th August 2020 where further details and the application process will be described.

Student Nurse Placements

Have you wanted to offer student nurse placements but haven’t been able to?

There is an exciting opportunity for PCNs in Devon to be part of a HEE funded SW CLiP Pilot, starting January 2021, to increase Student Nurse Placement numbers in Primary Care. Please read the attached flyer.

Under a CLiP model, students are placed in a group rather than the traditional 'one nurse at a time' in a single GP Practice. They learn as a group, with peer support under a "Coaching Method". The CLiP pilot aims to place between 4 and 8 students (with a minimum of 2 students in any one site) across multiple GP practices in a PCN.

Key benefits - it doesn't just enable more nurses to be placed in practice; the quality of the placement and learning experience is hugely improved and students don’t feel isolated. It also enables other practices who couldn’t normally take students due to lack of staff or space to participate and enables other registered staff to supervise and support students.

Devon Training Hub has previously supported a CLiP project in Devon where separate groups of students were placed in GP Practices and Care Homes.

If you are interested in taking part please send an expression of interest to jane.bunce@hee.nhs.uk and book onto one of the two workshops on 25th August or 1st September 2020.

Video Group Consultation Training
Phase Two Recruitment Has Begun!

You will have seen from recent newsletters we have been running briefing sessions for the Video Group Consultation training.

We have now been advised of a new offer from NHS E&I that requires immediate attention. There is now a ‘phase two’ of recruiting sentinel practices for Video Group Consultation (VGC).  Phase one was for face to face group consultations.  We have been informed that in the South West we have been allocated 41 places for training of sentinel sites.  The training is fully funded and is being provided by ELC (who have provided the training for the face to face group consultations). The training is being offered on a first come first served basis, and practices will need to use this link https://bit.ly/nhsvgc2regions to register their interest.

Applications will close at 5pm on the 19th August, and training will commence shortly after this date to successful practices.

If your practice is keen to become one of these sentinel sites (please don’t confuse with Sentinel Healthcare – the 2 are not related!) you need to get your interest logged using the link above as soon as possible to stand a chance of being successful.

We are, however, aware that not all of you will be successful in this and so we are still building a register of practices interested in the training and will look to deliver something locally to meet the additional demand. As per our earlier email, you also need to make sure that you agree a lead contact at your practice and email info@elcworks.co.uk with the following information:

Area: DEVON

Practice name:

Lead contact name:

Lead contact phone number:

Lead contact email address:

Initially, only one person needs to express interest from your practice.

If you did not manage to attend a live briefing, you can still also watch a recording. The link is here: https://www.devontraininghub.co.uk/resources/video-group-consultations/devon-briefing-session/

If you have any questions please contact devon.traininghub@nhs.net.

Announcing the Covid-19: Supporting Resilience in the Nursing Workforce
Grant Programme

Applications open on 27th July 2020.
Grants awarded within this programme will be between £20,000 and £100,000.

The Covid-19 pandemic is presenting unprecedented challenges for the Nursing workforce. It is producing fresh stimuli to examine working practices and service redesign.  It is also threatening their mental health and well being.

Evidence-informed strategies and interventions are required to demonstrate nurses leading changes to clinical practice and service delivery.   Separate proposals are also required to describe evidence-based support for nurse’s mental health and psychological well being, both in the immediate and long term.

The Burdett Trust is interested in receiving nurse led proposals for evidence-based strategies and interventions which demonstrate innovative and sustainable changes to clinical practice and service redesign, as a result of learning gained through the pandemic.  It also wishes to receive proposals aimed at tackling the mental health and well being of nurses.

The Trust recognises that nursing is part of a workforce team and evidence submitted as part of proposals should reference that.   The Trust is keen to receive proposals that reflect a wide range of settings in particular those that are out of hospital and which cover both prevention and care in both health and social care. The programme looks to recognise and support nurses in a "new normal" world where our collective learning has led to real improvements for us all.   Please note that this programme will not support personal study.   Projects must be nurse-led and have the nursing contribution to healthcare at their core.  Proposals must be well-argued and demonstrate why the project is needed, what benefits and impacts it will deliver and how it will generate learning that can be shared, disseminated, and adopted more widely.

Eligibility   Grant applications are invited from charities, non-profit organisations and public bodies that wish to undertake innovative projects to strengthen nursing leadership.   Projects must be nurse-led and demonstrate an innovative approach.     Grant applications are invited from charities, non-profit organisations and public bodies.  The programme is not designed to support projects developed and undertaken by individuals and cannot award grants to private sector organisations.
