On a more pleasant note, we have an exciting new project in the workshop - a violin being made as a collaborative project by our luthiers. Although qualified violinmakers, the workshop staff at Grant Violins are normally neck deep in restoration projects, which use a variety of different skills to making a new one. So this violin may take a little longer to complete than normal, as we won’t get much free time to work on it; and it will of course have to be put on hold now for a few weeks. But it should be a fascinating and fun process to follow - here are a couple of pictures of the early stages!

The two-piece front and back slabs of the violin, each being glued along a centre join. The piece in front (spruce) will be the front of the violin, and the piece at the back (maple) will be the back. You can already see what beautiful flaming (stripes) the maple has!

Don't try this at home! :)
