SUMMER 2020 COMMUNIQUE

Welcome back to what is sure to be an unforgettable year!
First I want to welcome our Board members for the 2020-2021 league year.

Tracy Pietkevich will be our President-Elect and assisting me as well as working on a Centennial celebration plan. Sarah Fontaine has graciously accepted the role as VP of Finance with Jamie Margolis serving as our Treasurer.  The finance team will be working on planning smaller fundraisers spread throughout the year just like we did last year.  Jackie Martucci has moved into our VP of Communications role and she is knocking it out of the park, please keep an eye out for all her posts.  Jess McArdle is our VP of Community and she has been working hard at setting up events for the year and revitalizing our Little Red Bookshelf project.
Sarah Shaw is our VP of Membership and already has two confirmed new members committed to joining our league.

This year is certain to be a challenging one, where we will have to adapt and work together to keep momentum moving forward but we are prepared for it.  We have had several virtual meetings over the summer to discuss issues within our league as well as our surrounding communities.  We are looking to narrow our focus on literacy and growing our Little Red Bookshelf and hopefully taking it mobile! We are hoping to bring new life to our mission not only on bookshelves but in community events that will be rewarding for all involved.

I am really looking forward to a great league year!

Usually our league takes a summer break, but we have been making moves all summer! Our first ever JLGS Book Club is up and running.
This past month members have been reading
"The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas. This book touches upon the social injustices we are seeing currently in our country and features a strong female character.
We look forward to discussing this book in August.

The JLGS centennial year is fast approaching and we are actively putting together a committee to plan for our event! We are looking for members- both
active and sustaining- to join us in the planning!

In September, we will have a Centennial Exploratory Meeting to discuss ideas and everyone is invited to attend! Be on the lookout for that invite.
We are very excited for the upcoming year. If you are interested in Centennial planning, please click the photo above to message us at

Tracy Pietkevich
President-Elect
This year Community is refocusing
our attention on our
Little Red Bookshelf initiative!
We are hoping to ensure our current locations are up and running well and looking into providing more bookshelves in the community. We are also hoping to develop a mobile bookshelf to be able to provide more books to kids in the area! We are speaking to different community partners about setting up story times and expanding our early childhood literacy initiatives!
Stay tuned for updates and opportunities to be involved!

Jess McArdle, VP of Community
We are preparing for a great year!

With an ongoing pandemic, fundraising may look a little different this year and so we will be brainstorming on new and safe ways to raise funds and donations.
League taxes have been filed and
payment for AJLI annual dues is on the way out!

Sarah Fontaine, VP of Finance
We are so excited to have two ladies in our new member class of 2020-2021 thus far! Our first-ever remote info session was held at the end of July, and it was so nice to have so many current members present! Although Covid is changing our approach to attracting prospective members, we’re busily planning new and inventive ways to meet up virtually. For our current members, be on the lookout for a survey in the next couple of weeks- we want to hear how you’re doing during this difficult time and what steps our League can take to help!

Sarah Shaw, VP of Community
As we enter an ever-evolving virtual world, there is a lot happening with Communications these days! We encourage you to please follow us on social media to keep up with all things JLGS! Updates can be found across all our pages!
