COMMUNITY UPDATE
IN THIS COMMUNITY UPDATE:

SCAN News

An update from SCAN's governance body, The Stewardship Group

The newly formed SCAN Stewardship Group has been meeting virtually over the past six weeks, getting to know each other and having the opportunity to engage in workshops to learn more about SCAN's work along with civic action organizing initiatives and related work across Scarborough.

During the month of July, we were lucky enough to learn from a wide range of Scarborough civic activists:
  • Neethan Shan (Urban Alliance on Race Relations and former city councillor)
  • Jamaal Myers (Scarborough transit advocate)
  • Nita Goswami (Woburn Junior Families) and Leah Yuyitung (Woburn Local Planning Table)
  • Sean Meagher (Convene Toronto)
  • Regini David (West Scarborough Community Legal Services) and lived expert, Kim Marshall (Voices of Scarborough and Power in Community)
Through these orientation workshops, we learned that many groups are fighting hard to make Scarborough better, more equitable, and more livable for everyone. From transit advocacy efforts, to work on racial equity, to parent groups strengthening communities, to affordable housing initiatives, to campaigns such as the Save the Grace, we have learned there are so many ways to work together to strengthen our communities and ensure people have a voice in their communities. As we face such uncertain times, it is inspiring to see the involvement across Scarborough.

Going forward, SCAN Stewards look forward to guiding the work of SCAN to support efforts that address the priorities of Scarborough communities. The purpose of the Stewardship Group is to guide or steward the work of SCAN to ensure it achieves its purpose and ensure SCAN works according to its set of guiding principles, values and its vision. To that end, the Stewardship Group will be meeting in September to start mapping out our work for the coming year and we look forward to engaging and working with Scarborough residents to address inequities and create a more livable Scarborough for all.

-Chelsea Goldie Braun, SCAN Steward on behalf of SCAN's Stewardship Group

WHAT ABOUT SCARBOROUGH? FORUM ON RACIAL EQUITY IN RECOVERY IN SCARBOROUGH: Thursday August 20, 2020

The Urban Alliance on Race Relations in collaboration with SPT will hold a forum on racial equity in recovery in Scarborough.

Racialized groups make up 67.4% of the population in Scarborough, and are largely responsible for the vibrant and diverse community that has been flourishing over the years. The widespread COVID-19 pandemic, however, has magnified already existing socioeconomic and health inequities impacting Scarborough residents, most of whom are Black, South Asian, Chinese, and Filipino. An equitable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic will require rebuilding racial justice into the centre of our recovery process.

This event seeks to form a dialogue around what racial justice means for Scarborough as the City reopens and rebuilds from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Please register by August 18th on tinyurl.com/RacialJustice-COVID, and feel free to email UARR with any questions: info@urbanalliance.ca.

OUR SCARBOROUGH CENTRE (Scarborough Centre Review)

The City of Toronto is undertaking a focused review of the Scarborough Centre Secondary Plan, which was approved by Council in 2005. The intent of this study is to update and further articulate the secondary plan by clarifying and updating the vision, planning framework and policies of the plan, while also recognizing the significant investment in civic infrastructure with new station entrances and a new bus terminal associated with the Scarborough Subway Extension. The study will guide and support positive change and placemaking over the coming decades and support the development of Scarborough Centre as a vibrant urban node.

Complete the online survey and/or apply to be on the The Local Advisory Committee (LAC) before August 28.

Online Reporting Tool to Fight COVID Racism

Since January, 2020, we have seen a rise of racism in Canada, targeting mostly but not exclusively Chinese Canadians and Asian Canadians.  Fear and hatred have led some Canadians to blame Chinese Canadians for bringing the virus to Canada.  The pandemic provides an excuse for those who have long harboured racist ideology towards Chinese Canadians in particular and Asian Canadians in general to act out their belief.

Use the online tool, www.covidracism.ca, to report incidents of racism and related intolerance towards people of Asian descent, as well as other People of Colour and Indigenous Peoples.

The result of the reporting tool will be analysed and released in the months ahead, and will form part of our recommendations for policy change to address the underlying structural and systemic racism in the long run.

Red Cross, City of Toronto and other partners: Food Delivery for Seniors

Contact: 1-833-204-9952 for eligibility and registration information

The City is working with the Red Cross and other partners to provide food hamper delivery to seniors and others in need who are unable to leave their homes. This is in response to the March 30 Province of Ontario recommendation that everyone over the age of 70 should self-isolate as part of the COVID-19 emergency measures.

With support from United Way of Greater Toronto, this service is made available for qualifying seniors and others that are in self-isolation who do not have alternative access to food (through family, friends, availability of food delivery services) and are currently not receiving such assistance from another community food program.

The City is asking multi-residential buildings, such as condos and apartments, to allow grocery and food deliveries inside buildings to permit those who are self-isolating or COVID-19 positive to remain inside their units.
