Will Lockdown Produce the Craving for Spiritual Journeys?

August 10th, 2020
Hello, Pipers!
And a big welcome to the new subscribers!

I don’t know if you are religious or not, but in the times of big catastrophes and crises, people do tend to turn more to the invisible power that could save us.

Typically, this type of pandemic will make even the most religious ones question if there is God. We are easily shaken, extremely vulnerable, and yet pretend we are masters of the universe. When unexpected challenges confirm us as weak, suddenly we lose our peace, stability, and we start to question all authorities, from scientists to politicians, and supreme beings too.

New rules of social distancing definitely affect our spirit. Once we are fully allowed to travel the world, we may choose those destinations and experiences that restore our spirit.

In the twentieth edition of this newsletter, I bring you to some faraway places where some of you could look for divine.

Until then, do know that staycation, which is a vacation close to your home, is a perfectly good excuse to comfort your spirit! Booking.com actually has discounted stays for 15 % or more, so do make sure you check this special limited travel offer!

Thank you for being part of Pipeaway’s journey!
Bye! Or… Bok!
That’s an informal version of the Croatian greeting ‘Bog’, which actually translates as God!

Take care!

CROATIA / GREECE

Six feet (under): Tourism gambling on safe distance

I’ve been traveling through Greece and Croatia in the past month. Even if the two Mediterranean countries are comparable, especially on their dependency on tourism, their approach to making money in the time of pandemic differs a lot!

GREECE

Santorini sunset: Time to enjoy Oia view as never seen before!

Santorini is a famous volcanic island with iconic blue-dome churches and even more famous sunsets. But late June was the first time I decided to stay for the evening in Oia, usually an overcrowded touristic spot. Social distancing and cruise ship restrictions are not so bad after all!

VIETNAM
Am Phu Cave: How I got stranded in the Marble Mountain’s Hell Cave!
Asians like to build their Buddhist and Hindu temples in the caves. But this one in the Marble Mountains in Vietnam is quite special! It is a reminder of what happens to the worst of us in the afterlife. And I got to stay in this Hell Cave a bit longer than I planned for!

Lalibela carved out churches out of the hard mountain floor in the 12th century! These masterpieces of rock architecture are central to Orthodox Christianity in Africa. Whether you’re looking for world wonders or spiritual peace, Ethiopia is the country to pay pilgrimage to!

Indonesia
Chicken Church of Java: House of Prayer in the Indonesian jungle
Indonesia is a Muslim country, but a Christian constructed a building that surpasses religions. The House of Prayer for All Nations in the jungle of Central Java resembles a bird! It had to be a dove, but when you see the pictures, it will be clear why they called it the Chicken Church!
Sziget Festival, my favorite summer music event, is canceled this year. Here's a short footage of a tent accident one visitor had in 2017, the most popular Sziget video on Pipeaway's Youtube channel.
