Well friends it is August! We have had an unusual summer and it’s time for an update on what’s going on with the Gibbs.
We are still in Pine River at our little house. It is a wonderful blessing to have a home base close to Dan’s mom during this time. We have not been able to visit with her face to face as her senior housing facility has been locked down for 4 months. However, we have been able to take her to some appointments when that was allowed and just this week, we can get into her apartment to help her with some caregiving items. Please keep Elsie in prayer as over 4 months of isolation is very hard on a 93-year-old brain.
Dan has continued to have A-fib about once every 3 weeks or so. Last week we had an appointment with the heart specialist and he believes Dan is a very good candidate for an ablation to help with the A-fib. Wednesday, August 12 Dan will have that procedure done at the Heart Institute at Abbott Northwestern. He will be in the hospital overnight and recovery time is minimal. We are thankful that we can have that done so soon.
Since our last newsletter, we have continued having Zoom meetings with people and churches interested in the Gotel Initiative as well as our African Missionaries group and a book discussion group on the book “Ephesiology”. Tina has really enjoyed the BSF study this year on Acts and another Bible Study with a small group of ladies. Dan continues to work with our Nigerian leadership team in Nigeria to move ministry forward as much as possible during this time.
We have organized a packing center in our pole barn and are packing, labeling, and weighing each box that will go on our next container to Nigeria. Because of Covid we have no idea at this time when that will be.
There is still no news about our expected return to Nigeria. Delta has started scheduling flights to Nigeria in September but there is still no word from Nigeria as to when International travel will be permitted. We were able to learn that we will be able to renew our work permits, under a grace period, when we return to Nigeria.
Overall, the rates of Covid in Nigeria have been low and in Taraba State, there have been 54 cases with no cases near us. Taraba state is the only state in Nigeria with zero Covid deaths. We have been able to finish the infectious ward remodel so we have a way to keep infectious patients separate from others. This is needed not only if we have cases of Covid but also TB etc.
In His Service,
Dan & Tina Gibbs
