5T5M = 5 things of value that take less than 5 minutes to read

Thought:

James Clear, author of the book Atomic Habits, wrote that there are five primary drivers of human behavior:

•    Safety: Does it provide peace of mind or reduce risk?
•    Sex: Does it help them find love or make love?
•    Convenience: Does it save time or energy?
•    Social norms: Does it help them get along with others?
•    Status: Does it improve their standing or help them gain approval?

I like his list, but I think he’s missing a big one: meaning and significance. We all want to know that what we are doing matters.

I’m obsessed with questions (I co-wrote a small book on it. Even the topic of my dissertation was on the importance of leaders asking better questions). I thoroughly believe if we ask better questions, we make better decisions and cultivate deeper connections with others. When I saw this article I knew it would be a good one.

“The Questions That Will Get Me Through the Pandemic"

Ever wonder why you have so many creative ideas in the shower? Curious how taking regular walks can help you grow to be more resilient? That’s what I discussed on a recent episode of The Resilient Leaders Podcast.

Episode 27 | "Why Taking Walks Increases Your Resiliency as a Leader"

Quote:

The leader has a special responsibility to pay attention to what’s happening inside of himself or herself lest the act of leadership do more harm than good

— Parker Palmer

Question:

Nobody drifts into a life of meaning and purpose. What are 2-3 ways you can be intentional and purposeful this week?
Thanks for reading 5T5M. If you find 5T5M to be beneficial and adding value to your leadership, could you do me a favor and share this email with a friend who might enjoy receiving it? Thanks in advance!
