Dear Friend,

“Election day is in 83 days! What can I do to get involved?” We hear this question a lot from our neighbors, families and friends. The short answer is: there is a lot you can do!

Get involved locally.
Vail Valley Votes will continue to keep you informed about issues (including the ballot measures that will be on the Colorado ballot in November) and candidates. We are about to put out yard signs, storefront posters and bus signage that encourages people to register to vote and to vote. We will also be texting voters in CD3 about registering and voting. If you’d like to help (we will train you to use a third party so you will not be using your phone or your phone number) please contact us at vailvalleyvotes@gmail.com. And, of course, this all costs money! If you can chip in even $5 or $10, we would be very appreciative – here’s a link to our Act Blue donation page.

In the 2016 election, 43 percent of eligible voters nationwide did not vote! If you are a Colorado resident, check NOW to make sure that you are registered, and that your address (where the ballot will be mailed and, if different, where you live) is correct. You can do this at govotecolorado.gov.

If you are not a Colorado resident, you can check your voter registration at votesaveamerica.com or vote.org or rockthevote.org. Those websites will also help you register or request an absentee ballot.

Get others to register!
Studies show that peer pressure is one of the most useful interventions to get people to vote. A volunteer reaching out to someone they already know is shown to be twice as effective than a volunteer reaching out to a stranger. Be sure to talk to your friends/parents/kids and make sure they check their voter registration record and are planning to vote. Share the websites listed above to make it easy.

Another way to reach out to voters is by helping one of the many organizations working on getting out the vote. Here are a few we like and recommend:
  • Vote Forward. Votefwd.org. This organization is working together with Swing Left and plans to send postcards to 10 million voters (they are up to 3.27 million to date). You can write postcards to voters in thirteen states from the comfort of your home.
  • Vote Save America. votesaveamerica.com/.This organization is running an Adopt a State project in six key states: Arizona, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Through their Every Last Vote program you can volunteer to help with voter protection efforts in many states. They are also working with PowerPac, a social justice organization, to “raise funds to support on-the-ground efforts to mobilize Black, brown, indigenous and other marginalized communities that are routinely victims of targeted voter suppression”.
  • Vote.org. vote.org/. This organization is reaching out by text to young voters, low-income voters and voters of color in states where they believe they can have the greatest impact. They need donations to enable them to reach out to more voters.
  • Swing Left. swingleft.org/. This organization runs virtual phone banks and organizes letter writing campaigns. You can talk to a field adviser to help find the right fit for you. Swing Left is focusing on 12 “Super States,” including Colorado.
There are also numerous organizations working on voter protection, including Black Voters Matter, Fair Fight, Let America Vote and Spread the Vote. Check out their websites for ways to help. These websites and more are posted on our website at vailvalleyvotes.org/resources.

Do you have a candidate you like?
Contact the campaign. They greatly appreciate any financial support, and will tell you how you can volunteer, which might include sending texts, writing postcards or making calls.

Be an election judge
Consider working as an election judge. In most years the judges tend to be over 60, and during the pandemic some may be unable to volunteer due to their higher risk profile. Election judges do get paid. More information is available at eaglecounty.us/Clerk/Voting_and_Elections/Become_an_Election_Judge/.

If none of the above sound appealing, check out the League of Women Voters site for a list of 100 things to do before the election: lwv.org/blog/100-days-and-100-ways-get-ready-election-day

AND DON’T FORGET TO FILL OUT YOUR CENSUS FORM IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY DONE SO. The Trump administration has decided to end canvassing one month early, which is likely to result in a significant undercount, particularly of minority groups. We need an accurate count to ensure that we receive the funding our community needs for public and emergency services, schools, and planning for future development.  The census count also determines the number of Representatives that each State has in Congress.Visit census.gov for more information, and to complete your Census. It's easy, quick, and confidential, and will make a positive difference to our community!

And finally….
Please share this newsletter with your family and friends!
