Dear Parents,

On Sunday after attending church on-line, I decided to squeeze in a few minutes of rest at the pool. It was early, and I imagined it would be quiet. The sun was shining on one part of the pool – the part littered with floaties and Barbie dolls. A young couple with a toddler encouraged playful swimming. Three-year-old triplets in identical swimsuits and goggles chattered constantly with their parents and their cousin. Another couple was fully under an umbrella and without children. During the fifteen minutes that the children and I shared time at the pool, there was a steady stream of questions, statements, conversation, tears, encouragement, and giggles. After a ten-minute process of packing up and the children were on their way to lunch or a nap, the older couple under the umbrella turned to me and said, “Got quiet in a hurry, didn’t it?” I laughed, commenting that I now had content for my principal newsletter.

It has been quiet at Whitefield all summer long, even in the midst of finishing construction, the deliveries of furniture, and lots of meetings. The halls have longed for giggles, and the rooms have yearned for questions and even the non-sequitur statements that so often are a part of an elementary classroom! As we prepare to begin the school year on Monday, August 17, we look forward to seeing students in our spaces, to hearing laughter on the playground, and to easing nervousness for a child or two who might be worried. We are ready for you. The faculty has worked diligently and with great heart to prepare a home away from home for your children. The classrooms are beautiful, the lessons are prepared, and our new protocols are in place to keep us all learning, healthy, and safe.  And so, “I give thanks to the Lord for He is good; His love endures forever.” Psalm 107:1

What a blessing to partner with you this year!

In Him,

Maryellen

Keeping Informed
For the most up-to-date information, please visit the school's website, which will be updated regularly.

Masks
As you read in the Together 2020-2021 website, all faculty and students will wear masks when they cannot be physically distanced. To keep up with the mask during the school day, navy adjustable, breakaway lanyards have been purchased for every child. There have been some inquiries as to whether or not students can wear a face shield as opposed to a mask. The Department of Health has identified that a face shield alone is not as effective as a face mask. If you prefer for your child to wear a face shield, here is an example of a school-approved option. Gaiters with no logos (other than a Whitefield logo that athletes will be using) are also acceptable. Hand sanitizer stations will be available throughout campus and in classrooms.

Carpool Routes
As we work to keep our campus safe, having clear carpool procedures can help to facilitate traffic flow through campus and protect our students as they walk to their classrooms. Please review the Morning Carpool map and Afternoon Carpool map to ensure a smooth pick-up and drop-off transition.

Water Bottles
To minimize contact with shared water fountains, we are encouraging students to bring their own large, refillable water bottles. Special water fountains equipped with bottle fillers have been ordered for our campus and will be installed upon arrival; until then, we ask that students arrive with water bottles already filled for the day.

Google Classroom Tutorial
Director of Instructional Technology Bethany Brant will be hosting a Google Classroom tutorial via Zoom for Middle School parents on Tuesday, August 18 at 10 a.m and 5 p.m. The sessions will be identical, so there is no need to attend at both times. To join the tutorial, use this link when logging on.

Morning Arrival
Students may be dropped off as early as 7:30 a.m. each morning and will have their temperature screened at that time by those opening the car doors. Teachers will supervise students in the dining hall beginning at 7:30. Students will be dismissed at 7:50 a.m. to go to classrooms. School begins at 8:00 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. On Wednesdays, school begins at 9:00 a.m. Cub Care is available on Wednesday mornings.

Chapel
Lower School chapel takes place on Thursdays for kindergarten through 4th grade; PreK students do not attend chapel during fall semester. Kindergarten through 4th grade students should wear their chapel uniforms on these days. The first two, however, will be different.

  • Thursday, August 20: Regular uniform
  • Friday, August 21: Students will wear their chapel uniforms for the all-school chapel.
  • Wednesday, August 26: Students will wear their chapel uniforms for school pictures.
  • Thursday, August 27: We will have chapel, but students will wear their regular uniform.
  • Thursday, September 3: Back to normal with chapel uniforms every Thursday!

In a blend of Whitefield tradition and physical distancing, our annual All-School Back-To-School Chapel will take place on Friday, August 21 at 9:15 a.m. in the Athletic Center. Kindergarten students and Upper School seniors will be physically in attendance, while 1st grade through 11th grade students will participate via livestream from their classrooms. Kindergarten parents and parents of seniors are invited to attend; masks are required. Additional details about this event will be shared in upcoming communications.

Cohorts
In Mode 3A, students in grades one through four are split in half to increase physical distancing, using spaces in Brostrand Hall and in the former Lower School mods. The teacher and the teaching assistant will be engaged with your children. Beginning on the first day of school, students in first and fourth grades will begin in the former Lower School mods for two weeks. On August 31, first and fourth graders will return to Brostrand Hall and second and third graders will begin in the mods for their two-week rotation. We will continue a two-week rotation until we are able to move to Mode 2.

Whitefield's Annual Great Day of Service
This year's Great Day of Service will take place on Saturday, August 22. This annual event is designed to come together as the Whitefield community and start off the school year with a focus on others ahead of self. On this day, you’ll not only bond as a group, but be the hands and feet of Jesus to people and organizations that desperately need assistance. Each year, there are a variety of projects available for ALL ages and abilities. We also have a few projects that can be done at home this year, if that is more comfortable for you and your family. For more information or to register for a project, click here.
