Pua o te Rēinga – Dactylanthus Taylorii – Woodrose Whakakāinga Anō - Translocation

Who can name a plant that has no leaves, no stems, and, no roots?  Produces 1 litre of nectar a week, is pollinated by bats, grows underground, produces a wooden rose - Pua o te Rēinga is a very special plant, once widespread across the country, but now only survives in controlled managed areas.  It is the only parasitic plant of Aotearoa.  The support of The Department of Conservation (DOC) is allowing for a collaborative multi-Iwi approach to kaitiaki the future of this plant throughout the greater Wellington region.

ZEALANDIA Te Māra a Tāne, Wellington City Council, and, Ōtari Botanic Garden are collaborating on a project to translocate Aotearoa/New Zealand’s only parasitic plant whose conservation status is serious decline to Wellington where it was once abundant. ZEALANDIA have been kindly granted a permit to receive a koha of Pua o te Rēinga seeds from the Iwi of Pureora Forest Park and will replant them in ZEALANDIA Te Māra a Tāne and Ōtari Botanic Gardens.

The Department of Conservation have given us pūtea for Iwi to participate in this opportunity.  We would like to include representatives from all Iwi of the greater Wellington region to extend the experience, and, kaitiakitanga of this plant.

If you found this kōrero interesting then take note - ZEALANDIA have invited Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai to send along one or two interested registered members, to join this unique learning and engagement opportunity with leading experts of this toanga, engaging with the Iwi of Pureora Forest Park, learning about the maramataka and mātaurangi Māori of this species.

TE WĀ TUKU REO MĀORI: WHĀIA KIA KĪIA AI KO KOE TĒTAHI O TE MIRIONA:

Join us at 12pm on Monday 14 September to celebrate te reo Māori.

In 1972, 30,000 signatures were delivered to Parliament calling for te reo Māori to be taught in schools. It was a defining moment in the journey to revitalise our language.

We want to grow one million speakers by 2040 and today, as our language champions did in the past, we’ll start with a defining moment: the Māori Language Moment.

TE WĀ TUKU REO MĀORI

No matter where you are from or how well you can speak, you can be one in a million. The Māori Language Moment is an open invitation to all New Zealanders to celebrate what makes Aotearoa unique - te reo Māori.

By signing up, you’re committing to doing one thing, in that one moment, alongside hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders at 12pm on 14 September.

TAKE PART

Sign up now to take part on 14 September and be one in a million.

Your kaupapa can play a key part in encouraging Wellingtonians to wear face masks on public transport.

Face coverings is mandatory on buses, trains and ferries as of Monday 31 August.

Masks help keep passengers and essential workers safe. It’s important that we all wear one.

Come Monday, Greater Wellington want every Wellingtonian to be #OnBoardWithMasks when travelling on public transport.

We can do this together:

Your organisation has a large and engaged audience that looks to you for guidance.

What you post matters, which is why I'm inviting you to take part in our  #OnBoardWithMasks campaign.

Here's how:

Follow these three simple steps, and encourage others in your organisation to join in:

  1. Take a selfie* with your face mask or covering - preferably the next time you’re travelling by public transport (tips below!)
  2. Post your selfie to your group's social channels with the hashtag #OnBoardWithMasks, and encourage others to do the same.
  3. Don’t forget to tag Metlink on FacebookInstagram, and Twitter so we can share all the great posts

Sharing this message will help protect our region from COVID-19, so I want to express my heartfelt appreciation for your involvement. Thank you.

Daran Ponter

Chair, Greater Wellington Regional Council

*Wondering how to post a perfect face-mask selfie?

  1. Make sure your mask is on properly. Check out these instructions as well as Face Masks Dos and Don’ts from the Ministry of Health.
  2. Don’t forget to keep a safe distance from other passengers – that’s 2 meters outside, and 1 meter on-board transport.
  3. Try to get a bus, train or ferry in your shot. If possible, make it clear you’re using public transport to help get the message across.
  4. Be mindful of other peoples’ privacy. Before posting, double check that strangers aren’t making accidental cameos in your photo.
