Call for thematic Newsflashes
We now offer our community members the possibility to release a thematic Newsflash edition. If you are interested to present projects, publications, events or introduce scientists working on a common topic in the Carpathians, please contact Dominik Kaim or Catalina Munteanu for details. We will provide the editorial support for your dedicated special edition. We hope that thematic Newsflashes will be an exciting new avenue to promote research done by the S4C community members.

A GIS Spatial Analysis Model for Land Use Change

This Special Issue aims to disseminate state-of-the-art research articles as well as review papers on GIS-based spatial analysis and model for land use/land cover change with the use of earth observation data (in situ and remote sensing), topographic maps, and any other sources of information on land cover/land use. Contributions related to geography, geology and geosciences are welcome.

Mountains under pressure

Montane forests and alpine ecosystems are rich in biodiversity and endemism as well as being a large global carbon store. They are highly threatened by climate change, population growth and land use change. Mountains provide an ideal natural laboratory to investigate the evolution of social–ecological systems, and to assess the current challenges and opportunities that this past evolution has created. The relevance and impact of this Special Issue on mountains goes beyond academia, as practitioners and policy-makers need key information on the dynamics and changes in threatened ecosystems to help design and implement appropriate management strategies for sustainable mountain futures.

Open System Modelling Frameworks toward a Better Understanding of Multi -Scale Interactions in Socio-Ecological Systems

The Special Issue aims at gaining new insights in analyzing as well as modelling human-nature interactions to better understand feedbacks, non-linearities as well as drivers across spatio-temporal scales. To improve decision-making in sustainable resource management, the science-policy interface demands mix-methods approaches including quantitative (e.g. collecting field data) and qualitative (e.g. focus-group discussions or individual interviews) research. Based on the afore-mentioned subjects, papers may address (I) significant findings about socio-economic and environmental interactions, (II) identifying modern model architectures or describing model applications as well as (III) recommending management strategies to strengthen decision- and policy-makers.

Weeds - art project about the political history and nature in the Polish Carpathians

"The Weeds" is a project by Karolina Grzwnowicz, a multimedia artist, who is showing here that plants tell a lot about the history of the place even after several decades. In this case, weeds from the Carpathians indicate the resettlement actions happening after WWII in the region.
