Welcome Back – Save the Dates for these Networking Events
Greetings Health Researchers,

We hope you have had a good start to the fall semester.
We are proud of the impact of our heath research efforts during these uncertain times. You can see examples of these efforts here at Prisma Health and Clemson University.

Though this semester has started differently than normal, we still plan to host CUSHR events.
Please save the date for these upcoming networking opportunities.
  • Health Sciences Center Mixer – Sept. 30 – 5 p.m.
  • Clemson University School of Health Research Meeting with a special feature on Clemson researchers who are working at the forefront of the COVID-19 Pandemic – Oct. 21 – 3:30 - 5 p.m.
We look forward to helping you find your next health research partner.

Sincerely,
Windsor Westbrook Sherrill  & Tom Britt

Associate Vice President of           Clemson University Research
Health Research                             Director for the Health Sciences
Clemson University                         Center at Prisma Health
Data Support Core
The Data Support Core is available to help researchers within the Health Sciences Center at Prisma Health for free. The support core team can help determine sample sizes, populations, as well as data analysis, initial data consultation for study development, translation of clinical questions into research hypotheses, study planning/study design assistance with data collection and methodology, and help with the write-up of the statistical methods for abstracts, presentations, and manuscripts. The Data Support Core is located at 605 Grove Rd., Suite 301 Greenville, SC 29605.

Data Support Core Consultants:
  • Alex Ewing, Ph.D., Senior Biostatistician, Prisma Health – Upstate
  • Moonseong Heo, Ph.D. Professor, Public Health Sciences, Clemson University
  • Li He, MS Doctoral Student, Mathematical Sciences, Clemson University
  • Xiyan Tan, MA, Doctoral Student, Mathematical Sciences, Clemson University
To schedule a visit with the Support Core, contact Alex Ewing at Alex.Ewing@prismahealth.org, Li He at Li.He@prismahealth.org, or Xiyan Tan at Xiyan.Tan@prismahealth.org.
Prisma Health Updates
Faculty, Scholar, Staff and Student Onboarding into Prisma Health
All academic partner onboarding into Prisma Health is now all through Student Affairs Administration under the leadership of Dr. Christen Hairston at christen.hairston@prismahealth.org, Executive Director, Student Affairs Administration, Prisma Health. The Student Affairs team has created a special faculty/scholar onboarding website to help guide you through the process.
FACULTY:  Faculty, Scholar, and Staff who need to be cleared for Prisma Health, please complete this application: https://hsc.ghs.org/hsc-faculty-staff-scholars/onboarding-request/.  This application is to be used for all NEW faculty, staff, and scholars who will be in our clinical learning environment, accessing patient data or those who are physically housed in the CU Nursing Building at Prisma Health.
STUDENTS:  For PIs who need to have their student researchers onboarded to Prisma Health, please have your student complete: https://hsc.ghs.org/research-enrollment/. All other student types, please reach out to  student.affairs@prismahealth.org. The general student clearance website can be found here.
Research Recognition

Congratulations to Hai Xiao, who was recognized as the 2020 Clemson University Researcher of the Year.
Read more here about Xiao, his research and this recognition.
Health Research Spotlight
Clemson University researcher Kara Powder has been awarded a $444,464 R15 grant by the National Institutes of Health for her research into the genetics behind facial development that could aid in the fight against birth defects. Powder studies cichlid fishes, which are ideal subjects because they are similar to humans when it comes to facial development. Powder’s research examines how changes in this DNA packaging, or epigenetics, can produce species-specific facial variations using essentially the same genetic building blocks.  Read more about her research here.
Upcoming Webinars
  • Beginning Sept. 2 – Grantsmanship Course – The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) will host a 5-session course on grantsmanship Wednesdays in September. Topics will include grant fundamentals, finding funding and understanding a call for proposals, proposal development and grant writing, budget development, submission procedures and what comes next. Interested in participating? Contact OSP at grants@prismahealth.org
  • Sept. 11 – 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. – Seminar by patient co-author and kidney cancer survivor, Bill Paseman, will present "Chasing our Cures using Patient Centered Medicine." Zoom webinar information can be found here.
  • Sept. 16 – 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. – The Addiction Research Center Collaborative meeting will feature guest speaker, Estate (Tato) Sokhadze, Ph.D., who will speak on the topic, "Application of Neurofeedback Training in Substance Use Disorder Treatment." Join the meeting here.
Health Researcher Spotlights
The Center for Human Genetics at Clemson University is excited to welcome three new faculty who will be conducting research with the center. Meet the researchers:
Zhana Duren, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences
Research:
My research goal is to answer the key scientific question "How non-coding genetic variant act through cellular context specific gene regulatory network to influence phenotype?" To do this, we develop novel statistical machine learning methods and bioinformatics tools. Specific directions include 1) inference method of gene regulatory network by integrating different types of genomics data, 2) single-cell genomics data analysis, and 3) identification of causal variants for complex diseases by using cellular context specific gene regulatory networks.

Lela Lackey, Assistant Professor, Department of Genetics and Biochemistry
Research: My laboratory studies the structures RNA forms and their impact on processing of messenger RNAs (mRNAs). A major question in my lab is how structured RNA elements and splicing proteins coordinate to regulate splicing across networks of mRNAs. Identifying functional structures in pre-cursor mRNAs and variants that can alter their natural form and function is important for understanding alternative splicing and how it contribute to disease.

Fabio Morgante, Assistant Professor, Department of Genetics & Biochemistry
Research: My research interests lie in quantitative and statistical genetics. In particular, my research focuses not only on understanding the genetic architecture of complex traits in humans and model species, but also on using this information to improve phenotypic prediction accuracy for such traits. To achieve this goal, my group often develops new analytical strategies and statistical methods.
