1. Charles Grant named executive director of African American relations and mobilization

Charles Grant has been named executive director of African American relations and mobilization at the SBC Executive Committee. In a partnership jointly funded by the SBC EC and the North American Mission Board, Grant will work to equip and mobilize African American churches, as well as to engage potential new churches.

2. Laura blasts Louisiana coast with wind and wall of seawater

One of the strongest hurricanes ever to strike the U.S. pounded the Gulf Coast with wind and rain Thursday as Laura roared ashore in Louisiana near the Texas border, unleashing a fearsome wall of seawater and killing at least two people.

3. Mission:Dignity Offers Refreshment to Faithful Servants in Need

Proverbs 11:25 assures us that whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. As Bob and Lois Kendrick refreshed others in their ministry, they have been refreshed through Mission:Dignity.

4. Evangelical leaders urge Ivanka Trump to help protect migrant children

Leaders of 16 evangelical organizations signed a letter to President Trump's daughter and adviser Ivanka Trump Aug. 24, asking her to leverage her influence in the Trump administration to protect unaccompanied migrant children from the dangers of child trafficking.

5. Warrior Creek Baptist Church members recovered from COVID-19

Almost everyone who contracted COVID-19 at a mid-July revival at Warrior Creek Baptist Church in the Strawberry community is over the virus, according to Pastor Darryl Ross.

6. On this day in SBC history...

In 1961 - Newsweek Features SBC Pioneer Work

Southern Baptists' northward advance into New England was publicized in the Aug. 28 issue of Newsweek magazine. "The last area of the U. S. to resist the zeal of the Southern Baptists, fastest-growing major Protestant denomination in America, has finally succumbed," the article states. There are now missions and churches of the denomination in all 50 of the United States.

7. BP Sports Update

  • Real Salt Lake owner Dell Loy Hansen is being investigated by MLS and the NWSL for his comments regarding player boycotts over racial injustice. Notable Black players, including Jozy Altidore, have called for Hansen to sell his stake in the team as a result of his comments.
  • Protests and discussions in the NBA related to the shooting of Jacob Blake continue, but games are scheduled to resume this weekend.
  • The BMW Championship is not The Northern Trust. A week after Dustin Johnson fired a 30-under par score, only three players are under par after the first round this week. 
  • Lute Olson, legendary college basketball coach, died yesterday at age 85.
