Question 1

Some factory-built fireplaces have doors installed when they are purchased, some come with screen fronts, others may have optional doors. Read over the statement below and indicate whether it is True or False.

Doors shall not be installed on a factory-built fireplace unless they have been certified for use with that appliance.

Answer                Responses
a) True 97.62%
b) False 2.38%

Rationale

B365-17, clause 4.4.3
Doors shall not be installed on a factory-built fireplace unless they have been certified for use with that appliance.

Question 2

How do you determine the hearth extension for a factory-built fireplace? Is it the same as a wood stove, or the same as a masonry fireplace, or something altogether different? Read over the statement below and select the best answer from the following options.

The hearth extension requirement for a certified factory-built fireplace is:

Answer                Responses
a) 450 mm (18 in) to the front and 200 mm (8 in) beyond each side of the opening 16.67%
b) 500 mm (20 in) to the front and 200mm (8 in) beyond each side of the opening 0%
c) Always less if the fireplace is raised above its hearth extension 0%
d) 400 mm (16 in) to the front and 200 mm (8 in) beyond each side of the opening 4.76%
e) Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. 78.57%

Rationale

All factory-built fireplaces must be certified and the hearth extension requirement is always listed on the appliance label and in the manual.

Question 3

Read over the statement below and indicate whether it is True or False.

A certified factory-built fireplace may be acceptable with an air-cooled chimney rather than an insulated chimney.

Answer                Responses
a) True 64.29%
b) False 35.71%

Rationale

The venting system is a certified part of this appliance and the chimney that has been tested and certified for use with this fireplace may also have been certified for other uses such as for venting oil-fired appliances (S604) or as U.S. wood stove chimney (UL HT). Specific factory-built fireplaces may also be tested with an air-cooled chimney system.

Question 4

Read over the statement below and indicate whether it is True or False.

A code complying masonry chimney with a properly sized stainless steel liner is an acceptable chimney for all factory-built fireplaces.

Answer                Responses
a) True 26.19%
b) False 73.81%

Rationale

While a masonry chimney, with or without a stainless liner, may have been certified for use with some factory-built fireplaces, it has not been tested with all of them.

All chimneys that have been tested and approved with a specific fireplace will be listed both on the label and in the manual for that appliance.

Question 5

Fireplace inserts and hearth-mounted stoves are certified to which ULC standard?

Answer                Responses
a) ULC S610 16.67%
b) ULC S627 23.81%
c) ULC S628 59.52%

Rationale

B365-17, clause 4.1(d)
Appliance, accessories, components, and equipment shall meet the requirements of one of the following, as applicable:
d) ULC S628 for fireplace inserts and hearth-mounted stoves;

Question 6

Since fireplace inserts and hearth-mounted stoves must be certified, requirements for the size and construction of the hearth extension for a fireplace insert are found on the label and in the manual for the appliance.

If the label is hidden or the manual is unavailable, CSA B365-17 has a requirement that the hearth extension for a fireplace insert must extend a specific distance beyond the front of this appliance. What is that distance?

Answer                Responses
a) 200 mm (8 in) 2.38%
b) 400 mm (16 in) 9.52%
c) 450 mm (18 in) 78.57%
d) 500 mm (20 in) 2.38%
e) None of the above 7.15%

Rationale

Remember that this ember protection, like that of a stove, must be continuous, durable and non-combustible. For these appliances, that includes the fact that it must be continuous with any existing fireplace hearth structure, a requirement that is often missed.

B365-17 clause 6.5.10
When an insert or hearth-mounted stove is installed in a fireplace, ember protection shall be provided in accordance with Clause 8.1.3.

B365-17 clause 8.1.3 Ember Protection
8.1.3.2
Any combustible covering beneath the appliance and/or within the area extending horizontally at least 450 mm (18 in) beyond the appliance on any side equipped with a door, and at least 200 mm (8 in) beyond the appliance on other sides, shall be protected by a continuous, durable, non-combustible pad that will provide ember protection. The 450 mm (18 in) ember protection required on any side with a door shall extend for the full width of the appliance plus the 200 mm (8 in) required on each side of the appliance without a door. Where an appliance is installed less than 20 mm (8 in) from a wall, the ember pad need only extend to the base of the wall. An ember pad shall not be placed on top of a carpet unless the pad is structurally supported to prevent displacement and distortion . . .
